Should i get puppy checked out by a vet or is this normal ?

My pup has just turned 15 wks old but whenever he gets excited / nervous he pees . Is this normal or do you think we should ask our vet to check him over ? If he meets anyone new he half crawls towards them tail wagging(nervous but loves to meet people) but then sits & pees , he never normally pees in the house . Any advice would be great thanks .

It's pretty normal and he'll almost certainly just grow out of it.

Alouiseg · 01/08/2010 17:47

Awww, my pup used to pee with excitement.........I actually miss it

kid · 01/08/2010 17:51

Yeah, my pup leaked when he was excited. When I opened the door to people, I had to make him go in the garden before coming back in so I knew his bladder was empty and that he wouldn't leak. It also gave the guests a chance to sit down before being licked to death by the killer dog!

elmofan · 01/08/2010 18:02

Ah thanks , i was starting to worry ,
lol .
Kid - yep having to forewarn guests of Oscars "happy pees" has become a regular occurrence lol .
Have you collected your pup yet kid?

not yet, 20 days and counting.

I have to go on holiday first, such a tough life! We are off to Turkey on Friday and then collect pup the morning after we arrive home. I hope DH realises that he is doing the whole 6 hour drive lol

elmofan · 01/08/2010 19:54

Ahh bet you cant wait to bring him home I had a sneaky peek at your profile photo's of him OMG he's gorgeous . 6 hour drive I thought we were bad with a 4.5 hour round trip lol . Have a great holiday .

we are getting another puppy in 16 days time

we already have a 7.5 m old springer, but this one is a patterdale jack russell cross, aka a patterjack i believe

we are all stupidly excited about it

sorry to hijack i just had to blurt it out!

elmofan · 01/08/2010 20:07

lol lou33

My pup is also a springer , Never heard of a patter-jack , Have you picked a name yet ?

lou33 · 01/08/2010 20:10

its just a cross breed, not very big

he is only about 10 mins down the road, a parent at my local school is selling him, so we have seen him with his mum and siblings, and he was already weeing on paper at 4.5 weeks when we paid the deposit

he is mostly white with some black and we are calling him eddie

kids havent seen him yet, but i have and so has the bf, eddie nibbled my toes

kid · 01/08/2010 20:38

I am very excited about getting him, but also a bit nervous too. I just can't imagine losing another puppy, it was heartbreaking when Moby died, I can't do that again.

I am torn between returning to the vets where Moby died or trying a new, probably more expensive one which is slightly more awkward to get to.

I still haven't collected Moby's lead or collar yet, my parents have had it since the day after Moby died. I have bought Teddy a new puppy collar but he will eventually wear Moby's big boy collar!

I have Teddys photo as the home page on my phone, sad I know. But whats even sadder is, me and DS stroke the photo

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 01/08/2010 20:56

My first JRT did this until he was about 18 months!
We used to take him outside for 2 minutes if anyone came to the house then he was fine

elmofan · 01/08/2010 21:23

Lol kid We are just as bad tbh we have Oscar as our wallpaper on the pc . I know what you mean about not wanting to see the last dogs things as my last dog Shep's(pts 3yrs ago) lead & collar are hidden under the stairs in a press & i cant bare to see them as i end up in tears & bought everything new for Oscar . Regards using the same vet - Do you feel they did everything in their power to save moby ? If not then change vets . We changed vets with Oscar as i could not bare to go back to where we had to put Shep down .

lou33 If i remember correctly the jack Russel from that program "Frasier" was named Eddie suits him .

I don't know about the vets, I didn't think they did anything wrong but the fact they changed their story about what actually happened on the day of the operation makes me feel they are not being entirely honest to me.

They initially told me that Moby's heart stopped within 30 seconds of the GA. The vet also told my dad the same thing when he phoned them up later that day.

But when they emailed me after I asked them to explain what happened and what they think went wrong, the vet said he was fine for the first 30 minutes and then his heart stopped. I know both are 30 (seconds and minutes) but thats quite a big difference and something just doesn't seem right to me.
Moby was a healthy dog. Can a dog with congenital heart disease really run for 4 hours and show no signs what-so-ever?

I think I just want to be lazy and stick with the same vets. I also feel they owe it to me to take extra, extra special care of my pup after what they caused my family to go through.
Maybe I am being mean, but they assured me Moby would be fine and that he would be back home with me that afternoon, I never saw him again

I am very happy to be getting Teddy though. I just hope I can relax enough to enjoy him, I'm sure I'll learn to overcome my fears once he is actually here with us.

The breeder is taking him to get his first injection tomorrow. I'm glad I don't have to take him!

kid · 01/08/2010 23:07

The breeder just emailed me with an update
She is so lovely and I am happy for her to be looking after my baby while I am away.

She will be sending some photos soon and the pup knows the word 'No!' God knows what he has been up to lol

elmofan · 02/08/2010 16:16

Awwwwwwwwww kid poor moby

I dont know anything about heart conditions tbh but that does seem strange that moby was so energetic & show no signs of any problems .

But Teddy will help mend your broken heart wait & see
Oscar is 15 wks old now & 4 times the size he was when we got him at 8 wks & the big lump still thinks he can sit up on my lap lol
I went out shopping for an hour this morning & when i got home he was so happy to see me he peed on my shoe

My local pet store sells nappies for pups might threaten to make him wear one if he doesn't stop peeing on people VERY soon

OP posts:
kid · 02/08/2010 16:21

lol, I hope he stops weeing on you soon!

BuzzingNoise · 02/08/2010 16:21

My dog was still doing it at 10 months. He stopped at about a year. Silly thing, he is, but we do love him.

lou33 · 02/08/2010 21:59

kid i am so sorry to hear about moby, and i really hope teddy helps fill the sense of loss you have, though of course he wont replace your lovely puppy

i can only imagine your grief, my springer is about the same age and she is such a part of the family now, and seeing your pics made me smile as it could be her bounding about in them.

i guess without sounding too simplistic, you have to treasure the memories of moby and enjoy a future with teddy, i know it is easier said than done though

i dont want to compare my springer with moby too much in case it is painful, but the one of him in the water did remind me of last weekend when we took her to a lake in richmond park

moby was obviously very well loved and had a great life with you, and you can also give that to teddy

on a lighter note, it seems like we got our springers about the same time, and are now getting another puppy each within days of each other

and you are calling yours teddy and we are calling ours eddie

kid · 02/08/2010 23:35

Thanks for those kind words lou. Moby was such a fantastic dog, I still can't believe he has gone at times.
I don't mind you comparing your dog to him at all
moby was born mid oct (omg I can't remember the date!) we got him at the beginning of December.

Teddy was born 6th June so probably a bit older than eddie. He will be 11 weeks by the time we get him.

I've never had a dog like moby before. Yes he was a pain at times like when he used to jump in the bath or the fact he ate all the letters, even the bills lol. But even though our time with him was brief, we have so many precious memories.

I know/hope teddy will be different, but I am looking forward to training him. I am very scared of getting attached to teddy just incase something terrible happens to him. I think I am already totally attached to him so looks like I'll have a broken heart all over again should anything happen to him. But let's hope that isn't the case!

lou33 · 04/08/2010 15:07

moby sounded fantastic

i am sure teddy will bring you lots of joy, and nothing bad will happen to him, but of course it is only natural to be nervous about it all

we get eddie on the 17th, but i am going to call the woman on friday to see if we can bring the kids to see him over the weekend, i dont think they can wait until we bring him home !

kid · 04/08/2010 23:33

When we visited Teddy a few weeks ago, we took DS with us. He was laying on the garden floor with all the litter climbing over him. I reckon he would be happy bringing the whole litter home!

DD couldn't come with us as she was away on a school trip. Her trip was very local to where we are getting Teddy from (Bristol) but she was busy with their planned events so couldn't come with us.

When we do go and get Teddy, I won't be taking either DC with me. 6 hours in the car with them will do my head in

lou33 · 05/08/2010 11:42

Oh god no i wouldn't drive six hours with mine either! Luckily eddie is only a ten min drive away.

I didnt take them before because i didn't want to be prstered into a decision, tho myself and ds2 had akready seen one of the puppies at school, the one the family are keeping. That is how i knew she was selling some.

As an aside, Dora my springer has just come and flopped down next to me. Not sure if there is a pic of her on my profile that is current, but can put one on later if you like?

kid · 05/08/2010 11:55

I've just had a look at your photos, love the one of her after she ate the lipgloss, she has that guilty look on her face that Moby so often had!

I use a springer forum which is great for sharing and for advice. If you are interested, its here

Ahh, Dora, what a sweet name
Teddy was almost named Ozzie, or Oscar but we couldn't decide so stuck with Teddy as the breeder had already started calling him that. So he is now officially Teddyboy!

lou33 · 05/08/2010 12:13

She is loads bigger now, thankfully out of my make up stage, just into bringing me a stone to throw for her to search and retrieve all day every day!

Oh aside from yesterday when it was a potato lol

How strange, we considered calling eddie ozzie too

lou33 · 05/08/2010 16:38

kid this is dora now

and this was eddie 2 weeks ago
