He's clearly suffering. Final decision made yesterday after getting the diagnosis of a cancerous tumour in his nostril.

Just so so sad.

I've made the decision to take him to the vets rather than my DH, as I was the one who did all the training etc and all the trips to the vets in the past. I think it would confuse him if DH took him

My eyes are so swollen from crying though.

I'm so sorry. it's the tpughest decision in the world.

winnybella · 30/07/2010 08:07

Poor you.

I had to do it in December when my cat developed secondary cancer (she had a breast cancer first and op, but within 6 months it was everywhere). It was very hard, but very peaceful as well- she got one injection that put her into deep sleep and then one to stop her heart- I really don't think she suffered at all.

I am so very sorry for you and your heartbreak.

All anyone can say is you are making the right decision at the right time for your dog. It doesn't make it easier, but I did gain a crumb of comfort from knowing it was the kindest thing we could do.

I am so, so sorry; such a loved dog will leave a big hole. Buy many tissues.

kid · 30/07/2010 08:34

I am so sorry to hear this. Obviously it is the right decision as you don't want him to suffer. It is still a terrible decision to have to make though.

Don't worry about crying at the vets, they have seen hundreds of people go through the same thing. Crying shows how much you love your dog.

How old is he/ how long have you had him?

Ilythia · 30/07/2010 08:40

Oh Heinz, I am so sorry. I had to take one of my lovebirds (that I had handraised) to be euthanised and I was a mess, weeping and snotting everywhere. The vet was lovely, even when I was making ridiculous requests.
They won't care what you do, they will have seen it all before.
Will be thinking of you. xx

ilovemydogandMrObama · 30/07/2010 08:54

So sorry. My old golden retriever wagged his tail into the vet's treatment room. At the time, the vet was going to do exploratory surgery, but the cancer was too advanced . Got his ashes (yes, they were his) and scattered them in Cornwall on a beach he loved.

He had a good life, and that's what you need to remember.

HeinzSight · 30/07/2010 10:42

I walked him one last time this morning and he looked utterly exhausted. Kept having to sit down. The tumour in his nostril had also grown noticably since last night.

He was nearly 11 and we got him as a pup. We've explained to our 3 yr old DD that he's going to have fun up in heaven in the clouds with lots of other dogs up there. It was just awful watching her hug him saying 'bye bye, have fun in heaven'

The vet was lovely and made a real fuss of him. He told me he would treat him like he were his own

We've opted for an individual cremation so we can plant a tree on top of his ashes.

I feel so numb.

Oh I am so sorry, we had to have our dog pts in March the day after his 11th birthday, it was absolutlely hellish.

The first three weeks are the worst imo, then it starts to get a little easier, but I still cry sometimes even after all this time.

Be gentle with yourself and expect to feel realy awful it is a true bereavement you need to give yourself lots of time to heal.

Sorry it came to this, but your last great act of love was the right act. Take care x

elmofan · 30/07/2010 11:16

I am in tears reading this So sorry . We also had to have our dog pts three years ago & we all still shed a tear when we see photo's of him .

HaveToWearHeels · 30/07/2010 11:38

so sorry to here this Heinz, I know what you are going through. Had two dogs put to sleep withing the space of 18 months and it broke my heart. Each were PTS at home and I held them as they passed. We now have a 5 year old boxer boy who DD 10 months loves so much, she crawls round the house to find him and I dread the day I have to tell her he has gone. Just think of all the wonderful times you shared and time is a great healer. I look at old photos of my girls now and can smile. TOY

Vallhala · 30/07/2010 11:59

I'm so sorry for you all. I hope that the knowledge that you did the bravest, kindest and right thing, together with happy memories, will ease the pain.

Thinking of you and knowing how much it hurts.

Val x

CreepyFunbags · 30/07/2010 12:03

Gosh I am nearly crying too. It is so hard but you did the right thing. X

anonymousbird · 30/07/2010 12:08

That makes my heart sink with sadness, poor you, poor Golden.

I have a bit of an on/off relationship with my DDog, I'll be honest, but ultimately, I love her to bits - we all do - and would be very sad indeed to be in your position.

Thinking of you.

Thank you for all your messages

Is this wrong(?), but every time i see anything that reminds me' of him I cry so I've just had a mass cleaning session hoovering up his hairs and mopping. His basket and blanket are about to be put in the garage. I almost feel like I need to re-arrange the room as there's this big empty space where he slept. I haven't brought myself to clear up the two poos in the garden yet. Sounds stupid, but knowing he'll never poo again (!) makes me' cry.

I keep thinking I can hear him panting or roaming about. I just want to cry and cry and cry
