Thinking of buying a dog crate

Still unsure about whether to get one, but I am considering it as the safest option for dog to travel in the car. I already have a dog guard for the car, but in all honesty, I hate it!

So what type/size of crate do I get?
Its for a show type Springer Spaniel (assume there is a slight difference is size between working and show type)

I have a Zafira so quite good boot size.
I would also like to a get a good priced one I have bene looking on Ebay but I don't have a clue so really need someone else to pick one for me

I have just got a harness seat belt type thing for cherry, haven't tried it yet though, will report back on how safe I feel it is. Cherry is smaller than teddy but I have had to adjust it the smallest setting and it is the smallest size so presume they go much bigger.

When I was looking for one, Pets at Home had some which had an angled side, so they fit neatly in the boot but allow a bit of space behind. The door opens at the side, not the front. Like this:
dog crate For anything other than a very short journey he needs to be able to turn around and lie down.

Having said that though, in the end we opted for restraining the luggage rather than the dog, and having a dog guard instead. We have a Brittany (so similar size to your Springer) and a big estate car, but even then there wasn't really enough space for a comfortable crate for long journeys (that he can turn around, stand and lie down in) and I couldn't face endlessly getting the crate in and out of the car when we needed space for other things (double bass, trombone ... don't ask!). It works pretty well and he hasn't eaten any walking boots or suitcases in transit yet! He mostly sits very upright and very neatly, looking out of the window (a pleasure which he would be denied if he was a in crate).

i second going to pets at home and just looking at the sizes of the crates in the flesh so to speak. however i had a beagle and used a seatbelt harness without any problems. except if i got out of the car and didn't immediately come round for him he would get anxious and turn around which menat he tangled himself up in the harness. silly dog.

Haven't a clue as I don't own a car, Kid!

However, I may know the people who might.

Pop your question onto the chat part of the DogPages forum. If they don't have a host of suggestions and advice for you I'll eat my hat (and then them, for being unhelpful!).

Do I take it that you're just a tad excited about your new arrival, me dear?!!

I have a springer and a crate which my dogs have always used in the car until this week when I took it out so they could stretch out a bit more while it is hot. However my collie promptly demolished the dog guard and escaped out the window so i think I may have to put the crate back!

The crate is brill have had it for ages, used it for all my dogs whilst they were house training.

My crate is a 36" one like this and both my dogs fit in it (border collie and springer spaniel - both on the large size for their breed) the ones with a side door and an end door are more flexible.

Vallhala I wonder what makes you think I am excited about getting my puppy?

I have to get my stupid holiday to Turkey out of the way first I'm looking forward to my holiday really and shall enjoy it, but I won't be sad to come home as I will be going to get Teddy a couple of days later. I bet he drives me insane when he does come home with us, thats what pups do. But I do know he will be very special to us after the way we lost Moby so unfairly.

I caught DS stroking the photo of Teddy that I have on my phone earlier!

Must keep looking for this dog crate, I want to be organised for when I get him. He will be travelling home on my lap when we first get him, won't scare him too much in a crate for 3 hours drive after taking him from his mummy.
