A much loved family dog has just injured herself and I'm prone to worrying excessively! DH seems relaxed but I'm not so sure.
Anyone there to talk this through with? xxx

Not a vet, but have always owned dogs, what has she done?

OnEdge · 24/07/2010 21:52

I'm not a vet either, but had lots of daft dogs. Run it past us.

Vallhala · 24/07/2010 21:53

Ditto, will try to help if I can too. Can you give us some more details please?

MammaK · 24/07/2010 21:53

She must have fallen or landed funny in the garden playing with her sister but now she is unable to out any weight on her back legs. She is showing no outward signs of pain when we touch her hind area but cannot even stand without her back legs giving way. She has just eaten when we put food in front of her. DH has suggested something muscular or sprained but I am wondering if that is the case with it being both her legs.

She is a West Highland White approx 4 years old (our dogs were from a rescue centre so this is just an estimate).

Did you see her do it? Or hear a yelp or anything?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/07/2010 22:03

could she have hurt her back?

Vallhala · 24/07/2010 22:09

Sounds like she needs a vet asap. It's possible that she has suffered some sort of neurological damage rather than an accident whilst playing and that would need urgent attention.

As I said, I am NOT a vet but am mindful of this happening to a Rottie I know well in rescue. He was lucky and is walking now, but without immediate veterinary treatment it would have been a very different story.

I'm probably wrong, pray to goodness I am, but would urge you to err on the side of caution and speak to your vet straight away.

Thinking of you all, and I hope that she is soon well and all our fears are unfounded.

i would say go to the vets too. If nothing else phone them and run it past them, ours are always very good at out of hours situations, giving avice without always seeing the dog (ie once said to me whilst my dog was fitting, "we will happily see her right now, bring her down - however it will cost you around £150 and we are unlikely to be able to do anything unless she is in any pain" which I thought was wonderful advice)

I do not often take my dog to the vet, but if she was presenting in the way your dog currently is, then I definitely would.

I hope she is ok.

Hello all
Delay is because I followed advice and called the vet, they saw me straight away - what a wonderful bunch of people!

Jessie our Westie was very stressed at being parted from her sister and immediately tried to put weight on her legs in the car to get back to her sibling. When we got to the vets, the vet saw that she was trying to put weight on them and she managed it for short spaces of time with some tail wagging. He is unsure at the moment as she is hunched and back limbs are def problematic. He did some pressure testing down her spine and was amazed that she gave no reactions when he would expect a pain response from a healthy dog! She is such a sweetie but that has made diagnosis more difficult. She has had some pain relief tonight and an anti-inflammatory injection. We need to take her back in the morning but vet did reassure us that it is a good sign she is trying to put weight on them. Def not neurological as there has been no change to her normal state and responses are all good.
Now comes the fun part - trying to make her rest!
Thank you all for your help and advice, really appreciated it xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thank goodness that there's no serious problem suspected!

I hope you all sleep well tonight and that Jessie is fit and well in no time.

Give her a hug from me and my 3 mad dogs please!

Poor little Jessie
I hope she is showing signs of improvement today or that the vet is able to diagnose what the problem is. Its always best to know what you are dealing with I think.
