Anyone used a furminator?

We have a lovely medium sized hairy lurcher. I don't seem to be able to keep up with his shedding & there seems to be hair everywhere even with daily hoovering.

Pre DD I used to spend quite a while on his coat and would hand strip him in the summer but I don't seem to have time for this now so wondered if a furminator would be any use?

Any experiences?
What size would you recommend? He is bigger than a collie but smaller than a lab.
Plus - there are lots on ebay for under a tenner - are these the real deal?

Thanks

ooh will watch with interest.

I have a cocker spaniel and the hair in my house is ridiculous.

we have looked at these in the pet shops but they are an expensive brush if they don't do as they say on the tin.

if they work though they look fab.

i bought one recently for my retriever and think it's fantastic. I used to hoover at least once a day because we had so much hair everywhere and now can get away without hoovering for about 3 days. The amount of dead hair that it pulls out is amazing.

Trace100 · 22/07/2010 13:52

ojpink - where did u get yours? They cost a fortune in the pets shops but someone said u can get them on ebay?

mrsjuan · 22/07/2010 13:59

ooh - sounding positive. Retrievers are very hairy aren't they?

I couldn't be without mine. I've got two Basset hounds, and they produce a surprising amount of tumbleweed, but with a quick Furminate once or twice a week, it's cut right down. They looooooove it too - it's like having a gentle backscratch. Mine's Petplanet's own brand but it does the job.

Gigantaur · 22/07/2010 14:28

i've just ordered one of the ebay ones.

I got the medium for less than a fiver. can't be bad.

Honeydragon · 22/07/2010 14:30

I use medium on my lab - I would cry if you took it off me.

As far as I am aware the ones on ebat are the real deal - mine was.

mrsjuan · 22/07/2010 14:43

Brilliant - I will order one now

This sounds just what i need, will watch this thread and maybe get one. No negatives so far..

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 22/07/2010 16:52

My friend recently got one for her Retriever and was a little concerned as it got out half a black bin bag of fur. I think she does her once a week now and it has made a noticeable difference.

claricebeansmum · 22/07/2010 16:54

We love ours and our doodle loves it too and makes house so much less hairy. Got ours on ebay too.

orangepink · 22/07/2010 16:58

Trace100 - I bought mine from a dog training class (£35), expensive but definitely worth it. I've been spending a fortune on hoover bags so reckon I'll save some money there! Didn't think about ebay but prices sound v attractive.

shelley1977 · 22/07/2010 16:58

I love my furminators,i use them on my house buns my kittens and my akita shepherd.I bought mine on ebay you can get them from about £7.

orangepink · 22/07/2010 17:04

Really wish I'd thought about ebay now. Have just looked and seen how low the prices are.

menaceandmayhem · 22/07/2010 17:09

I have one for my very long haired cat, bought off of ebay for £6.

You could knit a selection of jumpers from the fur I get off of her each week with the Furminator.

And its less humiliating for her than a lion cut!

HonestyBox · 22/07/2010 17:10

I use this on my cat - he hates it. Works fantastic, especially if you do it against the grain of the fur.

mrsjuan · 22/07/2010 17:12

Ordered. Looking forward to a hair free home!

just had a look in the pet shop, couldn't believe the price, how do they work, I have a border terrier, is it suitable for her? I also have a ragdoll cat who hates being brushed and I could re build him every week from the fur I pick up, he also gets dreads which end up needing to be cut out.

menaceandmayhem · 22/07/2010 17:17

HonestyBox -

I was expecting to see one of those comb things that attach to the hoover.... not a lint roller!

JaxTellersOldLady · 22/07/2010 17:23

I use one on my GSD and I also use it on my cat, she loves it!

A friend bought mine for me as she was fed up listening to me moaning about "the bloody dog hair"

I also hoover the dog, with the hose attachtment, he thinks it is a treat.

kid · 22/07/2010 17:32

I hot one from eBay and it's great. There still seemed to be quite a bit of hair but I figured if I had used it daily, there would have been less hair.
