Been on a long walk with my Labrador today and he is getting better he doesn't pull unless we see another dog now, but we went to the park and there were loads of dogs my dp normally walks him but I would like to be able to as well , I came back and my hand is bruised swollen and bleeding in some areas where the leather has dug in.

Any suggestions on ways to stop this.

lead to help with pulling

But personally I would work on the heel work with distractions a bit more - get those smelly lovely treats out!

slushy · 21/07/2010 18:19

That was why he went to the park to try and work on distractions . But there were about 50 dogs today 100 children (it was sunny here) and new area (which happens to inhabit loads of wildlife) equal lots of pulling. I think he behaved well he was certainly a big improvement (considering) but he still pulled quite a bit.

Thanks a lot will try that lead and was thinking about gloves which someone suggested would that lessen my grip on the lead?

what about getting some dog training lessons? i know i should have done this with mine!

ExitPursuedByABear · 21/07/2010 18:27

I feel your pain. I have a nearly three year old Springer and he pulls like a bloody train - hence most walks he is off the lead. I have a halti that I use when we are in situations where he has to be on a lead for a long time (at horse shows etc). Trouble is, he does not pull at all for DH, so clearly it is me not the dog.

Second trying a halti. I have a big dog who likes to say hello to everyone. It works really well. They cannot pull at all with it on. It just brings their head around to the side.

I use it when I take him out with my bike (so he can't pull me off!).

They are cheap to buy - I think I paid around £10 at pets at home - and very effective.

My Staff pulls whenever she see's a dog or a person, i often get blisters on my hands, she wears a harness which helps a little as i have control of her whole body rather than just her neck.

slushy · 21/07/2010 18:34

He is 10months and he is improving we have a anti pull harness which helps, but he still is only 50/50 bolting at the sign of a dog or a child.

He is fine with other animals and adults though.

Try the gentle leader
Fabulous and they can't pull at all.

slushy · 21/07/2010 18:35

is a halti different to a harness?

I have a gentle leader he puts his paw in the nose bit and off it comes sigh.

I also had quite a few people who let the children run up to stroke him saying it must be okay it is a Labrador then looking annoyed when he nearly jumped up on them you should ask first.

Now see why is it that all you women have the same problem as me but while I was walking around today I swear all the other dogs were tutting and sighing at my disobedient dog I could see it in their faces. They all seemed to be perfectly behaved.

Might not help, but let me know if you're anywhere near Central Scotland as there's a great obediance trainer there who does very reasonable 1-2-1 lessons.

slushy · 21/07/2010 18:50

No where near Scotland I am in a area where there is very little going in the way of obedience trainers I have asked for links here before and there are none within a hour drive, I don't drive, I assumed they would have a dog trainer near by but no(I know I should have checked but I really thought they would have one).

But he seems to be doing great without he does not pull as much and everything else is really good so this is the last problem really.

A halti is like a gentle leader but has a clip strap that goes around the back of their heads so they can't pull it off.

I get that. I have a big dog who looks a bit like scooby do. I get lots of childen coming up to stroke him without asking. I always say they must ask first (he's a softy and used to small children, but you never know).

One lad a couple of weeks ago kept kissing his bottom end - dog was not impressed!!!

BorisTheBold · 21/07/2010 19:11

I would go with the Halti then - you use it to control the dog's head (so that their body has to follow), rather than a harness which allows the dog to use their shoulders to drag you along.

Make sure you take the dog with you when getting a Halti though (or that you can return if it doesn't fit) as he'll try his best to wriggle out of it the first twenty couple of times you put it on him. You need to make sure it's pretty snug.

slushy · 21/07/2010 19:24

Ok thanks halti it is and new bungee lead it is .

"One lad a couple of weeks ago kept kissing his bottom end - dog was not impressed!!!" Can't say I would be to pleased either.
