A dog breeding question - what would you do?

I am not asking for any major judgement calls here about whether my friend should have bred from her dogs in the first place, just some advice for her now please. She has 2 Dachsunds and they had a litter of 4 pups last year. Although they are pedigree dogs, she brought them with her from another country when she moved and didn't have all the relevant (translated) paperwork with her at the time to show their parentage. My friend made it clear at the time that she is not an official breeder.

Anyway, she gave 2 of the pups to family members and sold the other 2 at a much reduced price, mainly to ensure they had good homes. Three of the dogs are doing very well and have no problems but my friend has just heard from one of the friends she sold a pup to that there is a problem with one of the dog's legs and it has to have surgery. She feels awful and has offered to pay towards the cost of the operation. She has already offered 300 pounds towards the costs and is now worried that she should pay for any vet bills which are seen as a result of this 'fault'. The puppy is insured and both parties are wealthy so its not a money issue, more one of principle and obligation.

Where do you think my friend's obligation should end? She is very upset about the issue and wants to do the right thing. Thanks

If she starts paying money out for this then the insurance company of the dog may want to get involved and ask why she is paying and potentially if they can deem this an admission of a pre-existing problem they may refuse to cover the costs?? I would suggest that she offers the owner to cover the costs of the excess of the insurance as a gesture of goodwill only. It would also be good if she could ask her friend to give the vet permission to discuss the case with her directly so that she can learn what has happened to cause this and what can be done to avoid it happening should she ever breed any dogs in the future. It will also help her to understand what (if any) the risks are for the litter mates too.
