In the next 6 month's me and my OH are thinking of looking at some rottie puppies.

Does anyone have one if so do you have dc's? what ages are they?
Do you have other pet's too?

Any infomation and experience you have with the breed, would be brilliant.

Thank you.

We've got two. We had them from pups, pre our DD (who is now 2.4). As I type she is sitting astride Boydog as he lies in the shade, gently patting his head.

For our family they have been perfect. We got them as puppies and were very aware from the start that we needed to be firm and consistent with them. Neither ever played tugging games, and we've always done exercises where one of us would remove tots or food from them. As a result, both release something in their mouths immediately on command.

They are great with DD. We always knew we'd be having a child, so were careful to be boisterous with them. On the other hand, much as we know they will happily tolerate being cuddled, patted, dressed, and once or twice ridden, DD is always being taught to respect them. They love her, and she loves them, it is lovely to watch. Needless to say though, they are always supervised.

I can't recommend them enough if you are prepared to put the time and effort in. They are fab family pets, and bond well with everyone - although if pressed I would say that Boydog was more my dog.

Am happy to answer any other questions you have. Oh, and there's a picture of them on my profile if you want a look.

cryhavoc Your dogs are beautiful.

But 'we've always done exercises where one of us would remove tots or food from them' did make me snurk, sorry

cryhavoc · 19/07/2010 17:16

Bugger. toys NOT tots.

Can I categorically state that I have never had to remove a child from either dog's mouth.

minimu1 · 19/07/2010 17:17

I wasn't trying to put you off. I am quite happy for my life to be full of dogs and not a lot else Just putting all sides of the picture and if you are still keen fab.

Have a lovely rottie who does agility with us who is fantastic and very very gentle.

thesunshinesbrightly · 19/07/2010 17:18

Cryhavoc - Thank you, will take a look at your babies now.

That's great out of all the negative i have heard against rotties their is always a beautiful one.

I am so prepared to put in the time and make him a wonderful, happy dog.

Do you have your rotties insured?

How much do they eat?

Kennels for holiday's do you have to pay extra because of what breed they are?

Do your friends actually come over?
(that question came from a poster of first page, not that it makes any difference to me)

Do you have to muzzle when going to the vet's? (stupid question but i have heard)

and why are people so scared of rotties do you think? they are wonderful dogs.

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Cryhavoc - your dogs are so handsome.

I cant wait to get mine.

Did you have a look at many litter's before deciding?

Sorry about all the question's
bet you are sorry you offered.

Don't worry about questions, happy to spread the rottie love.

I pay about £23 a month insurance for the pair. They go through about 30kg of complete food a month, and we treat them with a tin of meat every three days.

Both came from epupz. Boydog was the last of his litter- the breeder was going to keep him, but had to take in her son's dog unexpectedly so sold Boydog at 14 weeks. We saw his mother, and his father's papers and a photo. We had the first look at Girldog's littler, and chose her because she was the biggest and the feistiest - Boydog was 8 months when we got her, so she needed to be able to stand up for herself.

We've never put them in kennels. We live on a RAF camp, and leave them with the police dog handlers if we go away.

No muzzle necessary for vets.

People do still come over. Boydog was the most beautiful puppy in the world, so won a lot of people over before he got too big. Friends all know that they are good with children, but I always offer to put them outside or in the kitchen if people come over. I s&m rarely taken up on it

I am excited for you now!

thesunshinesbrightly · 19/07/2010 18:46

Thank you so much.
That's good, do all insurance company's insure your rotties? which one do you insure with?

Do you advise it best to go for the more out-going one rather then the quiet one.

How do you chose just one?

Boy or girl?

Obviously it would be in the future putting her in a kennel as i wouldnt do it as a pup and would look at other options first.

That's lovely to hear.

I am rather exciting myslef, would pick pics on and update but cannot think for the life of me, my password to put pics on.

Thank you again.

Well unfortunately my "friend" has a lot of "friends" who feel the same way as me, and she does bemoan the fact that people don't visit her often enough.

Unlike you I would be put off getting a pet that would scare my friends off, but then I really love the company of my mates more than that of animals, and I meant my comment to be constructive. Sorry if you took it the wrong way.

thesunshinesbrightly · 19/07/2010 20:43

No i didn't take it the wrong way, just difference of opinion.
No i'm not put off at all.I love the breed. If people don't want to vist for that reason it is totally up to them, i prefer an animals company anyway.

It's easy to just choose one, honestly. You'll just know which is the one for you.

All insurers seem happy enough to take on rottweilers. I think we're with Tesco.

Their size is a massive issue. DD does, occasionally, get clattered, but for the most part they are very gentle and very aware of their own size.

I have been slightly upset by the attitude of others sometimes. People tend to assume that a rottie is going to be trouble, and for that reason I have always ensured that they are impeccably behaved and not placed into situations where there is a chance for them to look bad.

I can't stress enough what a massive commitment taking on a rottie is.It's very rewarding, but hard work.

thesunshinesbrightly · 19/07/2010 21:10

Cryhavoc - Thank you so much.

Yes, that is what i'm bothered about being outcast sort of thing but to be honest i couldn't care less just make's me feel sorry that the breed are looked at like that more than anything when they are obviously wonderful gorgeous dogs.
