Petition to introduce routine Group B Strep testing in pregnancy

Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out to this community because my recent journey into motherhood has made me incredibly passionate about a specific issue that I think we need to talk about more: mandatory Group B Strep (GBS) testing.
My daughter was born at 36 weeks due to GBS. We were incredibly lucky that I happened to be tested, which meant we were able to get the care we needed in time. But that’s the reality of it: so many other families aren't that lucky. Right now, it’s often left entirely down to luck whether a mother is identified as a carrier before it’s too late.
For those who aren’t familiar, GBS is a bacteria many of us carry without knowing it. While it’s usually harmless to us, it can cause severe, life-threatening infections in newborns. Despite this, the UK currently does not offer routine, universal screening for GBS. Instead, we rely on a "risk-based" approach, which means we are essentially waiting for a problem to occur rather than preventing it.
It’s frustrating because we are currently lagging behind many other developed nations—including the US, Canada, Germany, France, and Spain—which all provide universal, routine testing as standard.
I’ve started a campaign to push for this to change here in the UK. I’m advocating for the government to make testing mandatory so that every expectant mother can know her status and make informed decisions, rather than leaving the health of our babies to chance.
I’ve set up a formal Parliamentary petition to get this in front of the people who make these policy decisions. If you have a minute, I’d really appreciate your support:

Whether you agree, have questions, or have had your own experiences with this, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Let’s keep the conversation going—the more we talk about this, the more pressure we can put on the powers that be to finally update these protocols and ensure no other family has to rely on luck.

Petition: Mandate offer of Group B Streptococcus screening for all pregnant women

Mandate offer of Group B Strep (GBS) screening for all pregnant women at 35–37 weeks, provide funding for NHS-wide access to testing and antibiotics during labour to those who test positive to help prevent serious newborn infections.

So sorry you had a traumatic time due to GBS, it’s shocking the lack of change over the years. Thank you so much for your support 🩷✍️ if you could share with friends and family that would be amazing! Thanks again x

It really is shocking and how they change the guidelines so often too re testing etc. GBS was found with my first DS (now 10) due to me having a UTI and my GP ticked the box for GBS when he sent my sample for cultures. I was fortunate and monitored throughout my pregnancy and given antibiotics as standard during labour.... issues but disaster avoided this time. I was informed at the time any further pregnancies I would be treated as previous positive for it...... 2 years later fell pregnant with my 2nd DS (now 7) and no one would entertain GBS no sticker even on my notes. Had several issues with recurrent UTI's during the pregnancy etc and reduced movement at 36 weeks, luckily I had a good midwife that day who was concerned about previous GBS and put a sticker on my notes for IVA's.... went into labour a week later showing signs of infection from the start both me and DS but they flip flopped about with making a decision, 12 hours later I went into septic shock...... DS born with sepsis caused by GBS.... luckily my little man was ok but we spent 2 weeks in hospital on alsorts of IVA's etc and his immune system was shot for his first 12 months..... some concerns regarding his hearing in his first 2 years but was all clear after this with no lasting effects but it could have been different. I did receive IVA's in my 2nd labour too but I believe it was left too long to administer due to their flip flopping and Dr's not wanting to make a decision and allowing my labour to progress.
