Petition calling for more women’s toilets in building regulations

This petition, which has been running since January, hasn't had much traction, and I thought Mumsnetters might be interested in it. Recognising that women spend more time in the toilet, and the resulting lengthy queues, it's asking that government update building regulations to create more women's toilets:

Long overdue.

Signed. I’m a regular theatre goer (including newer built venues like the Barbican and NT) and it gives me the rage that women basically lose the interval. I was at an event the other day where due to partial closure of the building, men were having to queue. The number who literally couldn’t see the line of blokes waiting and went straight to the door was hilarious. They were absolutely bemused by having to wait. It’s a classic case of equality not being equity.

l noticed something similar happening once at Menorca airport. Almost always the men’s toilet is located first on the approach. In this case the women’s was first and I saw multiple men approaching the loo then realising to their surprise it was not the men’s.

Have also signed the petition

Oh, I didn't remember to say that I had signed it.

Signed - theatre loos are often problematic.

DontStopMe · 14/06/2026 18:13

Signed. Thanks for letting us know about it.

Im going to the Royal Albert Hall on Friday. I’ve just had an email saying that they have listened to feedback and are installing 12% more women’s loos. Downside is the loos in the area where my seat is won’t be available for my visit but I did think it was encouraging.

Signed.

Why it is important to sign
Whilst there is no prospect of reaching the 100,000 for a vote in parliament:

  1. 10,000 signatures requires a government response
  2. To reach 100,000 (for a discussion in parliament) requires an average in any one constituency of only 150 signatures. So if in any one constituency we can reach 150 we can ask the MP to support the principle - this is not a local issue. If we can achieve 150 signatures in one constituency in a period of around a month we can argue that had the petition been promoted since it was started in January (rather than just over the last 10 days) then there would have been far more signatures.
  3. The Royal Society for Public Health called for much better facilities for women back in 2017, but nothing has changed.
  4. In Northwest Essex (MP Kemi Badenoch, former minister for Women) or in any other constituency in which the MP does or should be expected to support women's rights it is especially worth signing.
  5. It takes only minutes to sign up - even if you are pessimistic in this producing change, what is the harm in signing the petition? Nothing to lose!

Please do not wait. The more signatories the easier it will be to persuade newspapers and other media to cover this for the last few days for a late push for much greater numbers. Please do sign!

Please do repost the info about the petition.
