I don’t agree with this for most of the reasons already touched on.
Shortening the summer holidays would have consequences which would probably offset some of the perceived benefits.
A shorter window in which to go abroad would mean greater demand and therefore increased prices for foreign holidays.
Most people do like to go away in the summer.
This might be mitigated by staggering the 4 week holiday period in different regions.

Work arrangements - employees would also be competing for a smaller pool of potential holiday days if the summer break was four weeks. I can imagine that being chaotic.

fineforfew · 02/09/2025 09:06

I want the holidays to be 8 weeks long.

We love it.

when you have kids you do so with the knowledge they will go to school and also the knowledge of how long school holidays are so you have plenty of time to plan accordingly don't wait untill they start school and claim you didn't know and it doesn't suit you so turn all Karen in wanting things your own way

I was with you until you said Karen Hmm

fineforfew · 02/09/2025 09:09

summer holidays should be 1.7.-1.9.

Additionally, October and February half-term should be 2 weeks.

The petition states things that aren’t true with nothing to back them up, fails to acknowledge the impact on schools and teachers, and offers no sensible explanation of why an alternative would be beneficial. It’s is worthless.

I agree that children often forget things during the long holiday, but they have parents who can do some parenting to minimise that, and generations of previous children have coped with without issue.

It's clearly an AI job. 'Enhance' is chat gpt's current favourite word.

BluntPlumHam · 02/09/2025 09:11

If anything they need to be longer! Where DP is from they’re off from mid June onwards. Create a petition for govt to adjust work/childcare instead rather than robbing families of key quality time

Iocainepowder · 02/09/2025 09:12

Who the fuck wants less time off during summer and more time off in shit weather?

madaboutpurple · 02/09/2025 09:12

think teacher recruitment would be worse if holidays are changed. Interfering parents must be a huge factor in recruitment.

EndlessLaundry1 · 02/09/2025 09:12

No way, kids need time to be kids.
My children have just had the best summer, chill out time, lots of fun days out and hours playing outside with their friends. It’s would break my heart to take any of that time away from them.
Children are always exhausted coming up to school holidays, they need that time to reset and have fun. Ask any teacher…there’s only so much children can take before they need a decent break.

NewYorkSummer · 02/09/2025 09:19

Mine are done with school now, but make the summer holidays 5 weeks instead of 6 and tack the extra week onto October and May half terms, with an odd inset day added in it would make both those holidays 10 days to 2 weeks. No one needs longer at Christmas or Easter, they’re long enough.

Don't resort to the insult "Karen".
I'm sure you can make your point without it.

Same here

Greenfinch7 · 02/09/2025 09:21

Holidays are too short already.

museumum · 02/09/2025 09:23

No thank you. Mine is just into secondary school and I think the long summer break will be even more important as we approach exam years and there's more pressure.
I work full time and summer is a struggle but finding things to do (together or independently) for more weeks in the cold and dark or unpredictable easter time would be even harder. At least in summer we can mostly be outside.

SomeLikeitSnot · 02/09/2025 09:23

Can I just ask (not goady in any way as I am desperate) for those who love the long summer holidays and spending time with their kids- what jobs do you do?! I have spent an absolute fortune on holiday clubs my kids dont want to do as I just dont have the A/L to cover the hols (Im a nurse) or the family support to take them. I feel guilty and like the worst mother ever all summer and something needs to change before next year.

ClairDeLaLune · 02/09/2025 09:23

I’d prefer to support a petition giving adults longer holidays.

I like the holidays as they are tbh. Also we'd struggle for everyone to get their summer holiday in at work if we only had 4 weeks to play with.

But are you looking at this as a "good for children" or "good for the adults"

Obviously it needs to be both, but the first view should be "good for the children"

Personally, I can see both sides, as dc are often exhausted by the time the holiday comes around, so maybe 4 weeks at say east, and then 4 weeks summer holiday?

My dc have left school, so I have no skin in the game currently

EdgarAllanPoesMirror · 02/09/2025 09:28

What a stupid idea.

ShesTheAlbatross · 02/09/2025 08:00

I don’t agree with the petition, but often countries with longer summer holidays have fewer weeks elsewhere in the year. Norway doesn’t have a break between Easter and summer, and Easter is only a week, for example.

Nor does Spain.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 02/09/2025 09:30

Nope my kids don’t get anxiety about going back to school because they have had a good break and are ready to go again. I enjoy them as there is 6 weeks of no school runs. Kids get to be kids let them be.

But how would 4 weeks at Easter work with GCSE exam schedules? They would havd to adjust the whole timetable for them including the marking period.

NotEnoughKnittingTime · 02/09/2025 09:31

Leave it. It takes my eldest about two weeks to get over the tiredness of school.

Bunnycat101 · 02/09/2025 09:31

I’m already pissed off enough that my county has moved to a two week October half term. The poor kids now have to be in school until the 28th July which is just bonkers given how little already happens in July. We’ve moved from having lots of weeks with great childcare options to potentially having limited childcare availability in the October unless more providers open then. Near me, the best camps are Easter and summer only as it is more financially viable to open for those holidays than the half terms.

The holiday I hate the most is February half term. I wouldn't want an extra week then.

GreySkiesAndBirds · 02/09/2025 09:36

completely disagree
