Petitions and activism

Yes we do! All agencies and childcare agencies require an enhanced DBS.

Froggl · 05/02/2025 07:12

Unfortunately that is not the case. Hence the petition being approved by thr government.
Nanny agencies are also not regulated. They as a company can require or request one as part of their individual vetting process.

Not all Nannies or Familes use a Nanny Agency

Surely it's up to the person hiring, to only choose one who is working with an agency who provides DBS checks then?

I'm a registered childminder but there's nothing stopping you from paying Betty down the road twenty quid to look after your kids for the day instead.

FanofLeaves · 05/02/2025 07:34

I’ve never not been asked to provide a DBS certificate by a potential employer or agency, quite rightly, and I am on the update service as is every single other nanny I know. It is a necessary expense of the job, same as keeping my Paediatric First Aid skills up to date.

Perhaps this campaign should be aimed at ill informed employers or dodgy agencies that are hiring nannies without making sure they have the right credentials in place.

ChocolatesAndRainbows · 05/02/2025 12:32

There's no need for a petition. If parents choose to hire nannies without a dbs that's on them

I have an enhanced DBS im fully checked and anyone is welcome to view it and I know that's the same for the majority of nannies I know.

Exactly 💯

LittleRedRidingHoody · 05/02/2025 12:37

But why would a Nanny need to be regulated like this? Like any other job, it's on the employer to check these things - if you wanted a job in a care home, the employer will make sure it's done. Parents should (and do!) put in the same measures.

Many nannies work without an agency overseeing them anyway, how would Nanny regulators work? It seems like a huge amount of admin (and ultimately cost on the parents!) to replace something most parents would consider as common sense.

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 05/02/2025 12:37

If you're stupid enough to employ a nanny without even doing the basic due diligence then that's on you. You would be the one putting your child at risk.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 05/02/2025 12:39

Everyone working with children should be checked.

my best friends 17 year old daughter babysits for me. She’s not got a police check. If the petition goes though it will tank the casual babysitting market

Purpleandgreenyarn · 05/02/2025 12:42

Whilst I do agree all those who are being paid to look after children should have DBS/first aid, ultimately it’s up to parents who they decide to leave their kids with, whether it’s an occasional babysitter or regular 9-5 care.
Parents don’t have to hire non regulated nannies if they don’t want to.

FanofLeaves · 05/02/2025 14:02

I don’t think you can even advertise on the Bubble App without a DBS certificate can you? I don't use it (hate the cut they take from the nanny/babysitter and the rates parents are prepared to pay seem really low) but where are these criminal nannies operating from, exactly? Seems like childcare scaremongering to me.

Nope you can't , I used to be on the app untill they started charging the nanny a percentage.

Froggl · 05/02/2025 15:39

Not all familes can afford to hire a nanny via an agency, you just have to look at how many Facebook posts there are.

Thankfully the government and Early Years Industry believes all Children should be Safeguarded to include Nannies, Tutors and Babysitters

No one is disputing that though surely? And yes agencies do charge a whack, partly so the parent doesn’t have administrative responsibility of checking these things themselves. If you’re not going to pay an agency fee then it’s up to you to show due diligence, surely, and this is a basic thing to be asking of a potential employee that’s going to be working with your children! If I wasn’t asked to show my credentials by a prospective employer I’d run a mile, personally, it would be a major red flag.
