Petition for a National Referendum on Assisted Dying

''We believe that the decision to introduce assisted dying legislation in the UK, is a matter of such fundamental import to the future of our nation and to us as citizens, that it must be decided as a nation, not by Members of Parliament alone.''

''It is also our view that the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill 2024-25, now before Parliament, requires far more scrutiny and time for deliberation than will be afforded by a Private Member’s Bill, as is the case in this instance. In the interests of reaching a rational and reasoned decision on the matter, we believe it is imperative that time is set aside to discuss and reflect upon the economic, political and cultural contexts in which assisted dying legislation would be exercised.''

''Thread. Second day's evidence in the Assisted Suicide bill committee. Today's witnesses blew apart the idea this bill is safe for vulnerable people. As Dr Jamilla Hussain explained it won't just be a new option for a few, but a new reality for everyone [who needs to access palliative care] - and a very scary one''

I think there are two issues;

  1. Whether or not you support assisted dying, and
  2. Whether or not this bill will deliver a safe system.

I think 3. This is too big an issue to be dealt with in a Private Members Bill.

It may well need more scrutiny than it's currently getting, but after the Brexit debacle I find it hard to believe that a referendum is a good answer to anything.

I agree,

There were 700 hours of parliamentary time devoted to the Hunting with Dogs Bill, which was basically about killing different types of animals.

So there should be at least as much time devoted to a Bill about killing people.
