YANBU - I detest these blinding lights. especially when they're coming up a hill 😡

WearsBlackEatsChocolateAvoidsPeople · 05/12/2024 08:20

I am definitely signing this, I have taken to wearing night driving glasses because these lights are so dazzling.

Sunshineandrainbow · 05/12/2024 08:23

Signed. I work in the evenings in the community and they are a hazard.

Dfg15 · 05/12/2024 08:25

I'm sure there was another petition about this a while ago. Signed anyway. I find that I can't see the if the vehicle is indicating or not because of the too-bright headlights.

Jingle10thWay · 05/12/2024 08:25

These are awful especially when 4x4s are behind you I’ve had to tip my rear view mirror and coming towards me virtually stop at times as we drive narrow country lanes a lot.

mitogoshigg · 05/12/2024 08:32

Define brighter, the issue in my car is that the lights on taller cars are higher so straight into my eyes rather than brighter per se.

Circumferences · 05/12/2024 15:01

No they're brighter. Higher AND brighter actually. But the yellowish headlights that enable you to see in front of you without blinding incoming traffic are long gone

I'd rather have the safety of brighter headlights than the minimal occasional dazzle. I drive every night on country roads and only occasionally get dazzled, mainly by people forgetting to dip their main beam.

Nitgel · 05/12/2024 16:09

i hate these, yesterday i thought i was in Close Encounters and the car behind me would suddenly take off as the many lights were blinding. I had to turn my wing mirrors in at one point.

But how are you safer if other people are dazzled by your headlights?
It's definitely not the occasional person forgetting to dip, it's an increasing number of cars with lights so bright that they are dangerously blinding.

SanFranByAir · 05/12/2024 16:12

Hell, yes. This drives me demented, I do a lot of night driving and struggle with this. I hate when the lights are behind too, my rear view mirror dims, but the wing mirrors don't, you can be dazzled for miles.

Other people aren't dazzled by my lights as they are adaptive. I'm also not dazzled by others unless on full beam, which would dazzle regardless of lens and bulb type.

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 05/12/2024 16:19

Signed! I've been doing a lot more driving in the dark lately and initially thought a lot of people just hadn't dipped... and yes, the higher the car the worse they are.

DD is learning to drive and her instructor also said he thinks the move to very bright lights is actually dangerous.

Me too. I am older, but they are unnecessary apart from night driving. So I minded that cost a lot.

Funny enough the driving population doesn't consist of just you. YOU with your "flash someone and give them an x-ray' lights are probably dazzling other people.

A lot of lights can be adjusted and dipped but selfish fuckers tend not to bother finding out.

I hope something is done about them.

  1. It won't make a difference. Online petitions are placebos.
  2. It's a US petition not relevant to the UK.
Comff · 05/12/2024 16:39

I flashed my lights at someone driving towards me the other night as I was sure they’d accidentally left their full beams on and I could genuinely barely see from their brightness.

They flashed my back with even brighter lights! So they hadn’t left them on, their regular lights were just ridiculously bright!

I’m a good driver but I had to slow right down to a crawl until they’d past.

BearOnABlanket · 05/12/2024 16:50

I drive up and down hills and valleys, often in the dark and driving rain, and I've not noticed that it's any more of a problem than it used to be TBH. In fact I'd say it's better, as most new cars dip their beams for you, so the drivers can't forget anyway.

Now, the evening/morning low sun, that is a problem, especially after the rain, not sure a petition's going to help with that though

I assume you drive in a high off the road vehicle then if you are unaffected by the lights the rest of us are dazzled by.

Nope, I'm in a little sports car low to the ground.
