Hmm it’s funny isn’t it, this whole democracy thing - cos I’m pretty sure no one was told about removing winter fuel allowance from pensioners, hiking NI contributions, IHT for farmers or becoming directly involved in conflict with Russia which now puts us all at risk ….. but yeah we’re all good here, nothing to see.. “democracy” and all that.

Not me, I couldn't bring myself to vote for any of those standing in my area so spoiled my ballot.

😂😂😂😂😂

OP displaying her full understanding of how elections work right there.

So….do tell us who you’d vote for next time?

in the words of the Brexit voters…you lost, get over it and yourselves.

I can’t stand this bunch much but they are a million times better than any alternative right now,

Well a manifesto isn't a legal document and in less than 5 years time, you vote back in the Tories, seeing as you've forgotten the last 14 years and what a success they ve been... not.

Russia deserves all it gets, if the last lot weren't so spineless, UA could have used StormShadow months ago.

I’ve not seen a government with a shorter honeymoon period in all my long years…petition at nearly a million signatures in less than 24hrs.

im not impressed with tories either…….

but do we really have such low expectations that we now excuse parties for routinely breaking their promises. It’s not even that they haven’t done something they said they would…. It’s that they are doing things they hadn’t even mentioned, that people had no say in.

This government is like watch a slow motion car crash unfolding,

Yep, I will never vote for Labour, they misled about NIC increases and I think their budget is truly dire.

But democracy is democracy and they won fair and square. Disillusioned voters will get their chance at the ballot box the next time an election rolls round. Until then, Labour voters have got the party they voted for.

As far as i'm aware, Labour only said they wouldn't increase VAT, Income tax or NI ... for employees.

You'll have to show me the promises on War IHT & NI on employers...

they also made no mention of cracking down on hyper profits for private companies running childrens homes... are you against that? should an incoming Govt only do things mentioned in the manifesto?

How about you give them a little more than 5 months before being quite so judgmental?

Its not as if either of us have any say in the matter for the next 5 years....

@summer555 applies equally to you as well

HairyToity · 25/11/2024 12:45

Yep they've made tough decisions, but have been forced into it by the mess the Tories left.. Give them their full term.

Missymoo100 · 26/11/2024 17:28

Being told to give the government time, is like being told to wait and sit on your hands while a toddler decorates my house with a red crayon,- nothing good can come from it, it’s going to be huge mess.

Although I didn’t vote for Labour- I was trying to be optimistic, hoping they’d improve the nhs, be pro growth, anti austerity - but I don’t see anything particularly positive that they are offering right now. Labour said they were pro-growth whilst seemingly implementing measures that will suffocate the economy.

And I know, some of you will say they need time to fix the mess they inherited- but this is the exact same line that was also trotted out by the tories, they too were making the “tough decisions” with austerity- remember?

Pretty sure we’re all going to be a lot poorer moving forward.

Odd. There have been lots of positive changes already but you prefer to decide it's going to be rubbish before they have chance to do much. Talk about damning them without seeing what they do.

Bummer that they haven't sorted all this out already eh? I mean how long can it take? Maybe try looking at some of the things they've already put in place and not just at the Daily Mail.

but this is the exact same line that was also trotted out by the tories, they too were making the “tough decisions” with austerity- remember?

The difference is they spent 14 years trying to blame someone or something else. We have barely had 14 weeks.

MajorCarolDanvers · 26/11/2024 17:41

No thank you.

next time vote for someone else.

Daysnconfuddled · 26/11/2024 17:42

'There have been a lot of positive changes already..'
What are these?

All changes they've made so far have negative impact on pensioners, tax payers, businesses, students, farmers, drivers, law-and-order and free speech. That's a lot of damage they've done in just 14 weeks.

ObsidianTree · 26/11/2024 17:52

What is the alternative party to vote for? There are none. People voted labour because they were fed up or the conservatives. So really no point in another general election as the only other option is conservatives back.

The only thing I'd be interested in voting for is another referendum to rejoin The EU.

Oh don't be silly.

The WFA policy needs tweaking - but there's no place for handouts for people who don't need them.

IHT for farmers: this was policy as late as 1984 when the exemption was introduced. And under the new terms, farmers pay half as much as non farmers and have 10 years interest free to pay. It also doesn't apply to the vast majority of farms.

Free speech: oh, are you one of those who thinks it's OK for people to suggest burning down buildings with people inside? That's not free speech. That's a crime.

Law and order: what do you suggest Labour should have done about the prison population (which the previous government was warned about 3 years ago and did nothing about)?

Students: I don't like the UK system for fees, but universities have lost out due to inflation. Mind you, I'd like to see interest rates for student loans adjusted sharply downwards.

Tax payers: you're talking about the pay settlements that ended the strikes, I'm guessing? Well, public sector workers are also tax payers. And they have seen their pay eroded for 14 years while the private sector got bigger rises. Without a public sector, the country won't work. So suck it up.

And you haven't mentioned all the other things that Labour has been doing: employment rights, funding for schools, renationalisation of the railways when franchises run out, alternative approaches to bringing down the benefits bill that aren't just about punishing people on benefits (though I realise some Labour loathers love that kind of thing!), reforming OFSTED inspections, removing the ban on onshore wind (sorry, NIMBYs) - it's a lot in 5 months.

Of course you might think that all those things are terrible.

NotOneOfTheInCrowd · 26/11/2024 18:27

the national insurance hikes are going to lead to job losses.

1500 at Vauxhall so far, One of the biggest financial institutions has just outsourced its customer service team to India,
There won’t be wage rises because companies have had an NI increase as well as a minimum wage increase. So not only will there not be wage rises, but there won’t be new jobs either.

The WFA needed looking at but they used a sledge hammer to crack a nut, and instead of actually looking at it they just got rid of it altogether. Never mind that Starmer had a discussion in the commons only this year where he accused the tories of being responsible for 3000 pensioner deaths if they abolished the WFA.

Where’s the so called funding for education coming from? People are naive if they think it will come from the proposals to charge VAT on private school fees. A lot of those schools are closing because parents are putting their kids into the over subscribed and under funded state schools.

I didn’t vote for labour and I didn’t vote conservative either. Neither do I think that there is any point to calling a general election because there literally isn’t a leader among the lot of them.

But it was always going to be the case that no matter how shit the tories were, labour were never going to be any better. Be careful what you wish for.

And the “the tories have done” line can only last so long. We can’t expect miracles but he literally hasn’t done a single thing to resolve any of the issues the tories left. Too busy making headlines to upset the masses, oh and accepting donations.

Every politician is as corrupt as the next one. The number one criteria for being a politician is that you have to sacrifice any integrity you may once have had.

pointythings · 26/11/2024 18:34

The Vauxhall closures were long in the pipeline - that decision was not taken just because of the NI changes; the Luton plant was too small to be economically viable in competition with larger, modern and more efficient manufacturing bases.

Kemi Badenoch has not committed to rolling back the changes - what does that tell you?

Business had it all their way for 14 years. Tax and NI cuts under the previous government largely benefited the already wealthy.

I'm prepared to give it more than 5 months.

Well, i was listening to a news item on financial coercive control and a woman beaten half to death when she dared to leave and how councils go after these victims for council tax debt....

SENDS children locked into "calming rooms" and then tortured.

14 years of the Tories and these are examples of what Labour will have to get to grips with.

Every single public service is ruined, dustbin collections now proposed in Bristol to be every 4 weeks, roads, NHS, schools, public buildings....

The penalties etc on selling EV cars are a Tory policy, which Labour now have to revise.... how on earth did Sunak thought making UK manufacturers subsidise Chinese car makers was good idea... then again he thought Eat out to Help out was a great idea too....

How you can sit there and write "be careful what you wish for" is beyond me, its taken years to wreck the UK, it will take a decade plus to improve things significantly.

I’ve not seen a government with a shorter honeymoon period in all my long years…petition at nearly a million signatures in less than 24hrs.

There was a petition calling for Brexit to be cancelled in 2019 that received 6.1 million signatures. And in 2016, straight after the referendum, there had been one that called for a second Brexit referendum that had 4.2 million signatures. Didn't change a thing.
