Hi All,
Given the recent news about the community creche in South County Dublin, I have launched a petition to have cameras at daycare centers. Please sign, share and amplify - chng.it/Qq7TQ68gHd Opens a new window

Thanks will sign. Do you know which creche this happened in, or which part of south Dublin?

LesFromIreland · 20/09/2024 17:47

Some say it’s a community crèche in Crumlin but I don’t know for sure.

What happened? The problem is, there simply cannot be cameras in whatever area is used for nappy changes for obvious reasons (cameras can be hacked into by random deranged strangers) so any unhinged staff can still do whatever they please in these areas :(

Yeah I def can’t sign that. I've worked in the technology field long enough to tell you straight that 'live access' to cameras via the internet, in nurseries (ie: young children who can suddenly rip their clothes & nappy off for no reason, is not ever going to happen. It's just not.

As I stated in my previous post, ANY camera connected to the internet (even if only on a local network) can and frequently are very easily hacked into by weirdos. Farrrrrrrrrrr more than most of us could even guess.
This is why I never had a WiFi camera in my baby's cot! I cannot over emphasise quite how easy it is to access, even with passcodes etc. Even a teenager walking past your house with a middle of the range smartphone, can quickly hop onto any cameras inside or outside your house.
Meaning if you have a camera in your little girl/boy's bedroom and they're getting changed whilst this weirdo is walking past, then he can & likely will access it & see. Same for nurseries!

Never ever ever ever have a camera in your child's bedroom (or facing your upstairs landing/anywhere your child runs around undressed). Even if you've got ten different passcodes to 'secure' access to it. Just don't.

I've even put electrical tape over the camera lens on my DD's tablet and she only has really innocent, recommended as safe, games on there and nothing else. There's no point in me changing settings as these can be changed remotely by anyone.

It gives me chills to think how many parents think they're doing the right thing by having cameras all over their house inc. their kids bedrooms, fully believing that passcodes & Face ID etc is enough to prevent anyone else seeing and therefore protects their children. Chills.

Don’t sign, that’s ok. I think you are spiraling for no reason to be honest. Better have a baby abused by staff than have a camera

I would never sign anything in support of this, or choose a nursery that has CCTV the parents can access live. Ours has CCTV that management can access in the event of an incident (and they often do for run of the mill nursery stuff) and that's good enough for me.

DC at nursery deserve privacy, especially the ones who are struggling for any reason and don't deserve to have that literally broadcast to all the parents. Not to mention nursery aged children having zero inhibitions when it comes to stripping off!

LesFromIreland · 20/09/2024 23:07

And who is telling you about an incident out of interest?

The staff, obviously. We've known the management (i.e. the ones viewing the CCTV) six years now and trust them completely.

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 20/09/2024 23:09

Have you thought about the fact that people hack into camera systems? Or the fact that you can’t have a camera in a place like the changing area so if sick staff members want to abuse children, they’ll be able to anyway? I don’t think it’s a well thought out idea

LesFromIreland · 20/09/2024 23:11

The staff? lol. The case in question is about staff being investigated for abuse of kids. Please read the article and the petition before commenting. Thanks

I did. I don't see our nursery staff as a risk to our DC, quite the opposite. I'm sorry if you don't feel that way.

CCTV and invading children's privacy isn't the answer.

LesFromIreland · 20/09/2024 23:12

You didn’t read anything I can see. Thanks

I did read it. Confused I just didn't draw the same conclusions as you.

CCTV in creches isn't new, if anything it's becoming less common.

Of course I would love to be able to see my DC all day long, but I don't want the other parents watching them. Also much as I love our nursery, they can barely work their invoicing system Grin, I wouldn't have much faith in their assessment of the security of the camera system. And they'd say the same!

I think the fear most parents are trying to allay with cameras is the treatment of the children in the general living/play area. Cameras in the changing rooms is a totally different issue as a far lower risk than the treatment of children during the day by staff shouting etc..
We experienced very bad staff behavior towards the toddlers in a creche I had my kids in years ago and I think this can have a devastating effect on kids making them dread going into what should be a safe space.
Cameras reduce the risk of just bad child care and would have eliminated the issues we had all those years ago.
