Hi everyone,

I hope you are enjoying well deserved holidays!

Calling all teachers who have done in the past / are doing the PGCE or other postgraduate studies in education!

I am a student on the MSc Psychology of Education at the University of Bristol. For my dissertation, I am keen on exploring awareness of dyspraxia & developmental co-ordination disorder so would be really very grateful if you could fill out my short completely 100% anonymous (10 minutes at most - many have completed it in only 5 minutes) online survey.

I feel dyspraxia & DCD research is the Cinderella of research so I think that this is a great opportunity to really make a difference. The more responses the better and I reckoned some of you might be teachers that have done a PGCE or failing that be willing to pass the survey link onto people that they know that are teachers!

If you are interested, please click on the below link which will take you first to the information sheet then the informed consent form, which if agreed to, will lead onto the survey itself.

Please let me know if you have any questions at [email protected] and please feel free to forward the survey link to any appropriate individuals that you know.

Thanks in advance and cheerio!

Do you mean "what sex are you?" in the second question? You appear to have inadvertently used the term "gender" by mistake.....

bitingcat · 05/08/2021 18:09

Why ask my gender? I stopped when I saw that question

54321nought · 05/08/2021 18:10

Also, as a dyspraxic myself, I object to you implying that dyspraxics are not neurotypical.

Dyspraxics are clumsy. They are not autistic. Well, they may be, but it isn't related to being dyspraxic

Howshouldibehave · 05/08/2021 18:17

@bitingcat

So did I.
HBC125 · 05/08/2021 18:27

People love to be offended

54321nought · 05/08/2021 18:29

@HBC125

People love to be offended
it is not a case of "loving to be offended" - it is downright misleading to class dyspraxics as neurodiverse. For someone wanting to assess the awareness of dyspraxia, this person is actually damaging the awareness of dyspraxia.
54321nought · 05/08/2021 18:30

And people who want to assess awareness of particular conditions in teachers need to keep in mind that we are likely to come across 30-40 conditions in a couple of years, many of which change their names, and we are not medical staff, we are educational. We cannot be fully up to date with all conditions we come across in schools at all times.

HBC125 · 05/08/2021 18:33

@54321nought Oxford dictionary defines neuro diverse as : 'the range of differences in individual brain function and behavioural traits, regarded as part of normal variation in the human population.' So whats the problem??

StillWeRise · 05/08/2021 18:36

That's true but dyspraxia us relatively common and hugely impacts children's education. Like dyslexia in the past, a child with dyspraxia is easily written off as 'just clumsy' unintelligent or not trying hard enough

PricklesTheHedgehog · 05/08/2021 18:40

I started doing the survey as I like to help.

Was irritated by the 'gender' question when it should be 'sex'.

I spent five minutes on the questions and then realised I was only 20% of the way through.

Sorry OP, I gave up.

AvaCallanach · 05/08/2021 18:45

I am an ed psych of 20 years and I would count dyspraxia as a condition of neurodiversity.

AvaCallanach · 05/08/2021 18:49

www.bdadyslexia.org.uk/dyslexia/neurodiversity-and-co-occurring-differences

There is nothing wrong with being neurodiverse. It essentially just means the brain is wired up in a recognised within the population, but less common way.

54321nought · 05/08/2021 18:50

People take "neurodiverse" to mean "autistic". Dyspraxia does NOT mean you are autistic.

Orf1abc · 05/08/2021 18:58

People take "neurodiverse" to mean "autistic".

You might, others do not.

You seem determined to pick fault with everything!

I don't know why you think that. I object to being told ( erroneously) that I am "neurodiverse". You might object to it too.

And surely anyone doing an MSc knows better than to ask about "gender"!

That's not "picking fault with everything" - that is pointing out two glaring howlers in one survey

AvaCallanach · 05/08/2021 19:33

It's not a glaring howler. Neurodiverse doesn't mean autistic, that's your error.
In the same way that gender isn't the same as sex, neurodiverse isn't the same as autistic.

Myst97 · 06/08/2021 11:29

Apologies for any offence caused. I actually had no special desire to ask about age, gender or ethnicity but was specifically told by my supervisor that I had to, so there we are. Apologies once again.

Why gender and not sex, though?!
PricklesTheHedgehog · 06/08/2021 13:06

Have a word with supervisor, OP.

Sounds like they need to stop pandering to well-meaning but poorly thought through whims, and keep up with the real world.

Natal women are the female sex.

We are quite happy for men to go against traditional male stereotypes. But they will still be men.

Women are fed up at attempts to erase the meaning of female.

douliket · 06/08/2021 23:38

Sorry op
It won't let me continue to next page
Where I am putting in the answer to " how many years have I worked with young people", I am trying to put in 20 but it keeps saying that this is an invalid number

drspouse · 06/08/2021 23:42

@54321nought

I'm not a teacher, but I'm a mum of a child with DCD. It's usually categorised (along with e.g. ADHD, DLD, ASD) as not neurotypical.
Mathscourses · 06/08/2021 23:56

I completed it in under 10 minutes, and made comments when I thought the questions could have been improved. Probably unhelpful, but as I used to teach survey design and the OP is a (postgraduate) student I didn’t want to let it pass.

Also:
Q- What is your gender?
A- my sex is female

The survey let me add a number of years of working with young people which was more than 20. Perhaps there was a bug which has now been fixed.
