"Children shouldn’t be presented with teaching materials that suggest regressive and harmful ideas like “I was born wrong” or “girls are supposed to be girly”."
Please sign the petition at the end of this article.

This is a really important petition to stop children being being taught false or inappropriate information.

What?? So the charities etc that create resources would have to submit them to Ofsted before putting them online?

Fortunately the article isn't actually talking about materials, it's talking about outside providers which is an entirely different thing.

LittleBipper · 25/07/2021 12:03

Just read the petition though. It is talking about resources and materials.

So if I as a home ed parent put something I've made for my kid up on Pinterest I'm subject to Ofsted approval? Plantlife (for example) as a small charity is subject to approval? What about books?

I'm entirely GC (part of the reason why I home ed) but this is silly and unworkable.

Geamhradh · 25/07/2021 12:11

In fairness, it's not "outside" educators doing it. It's mainstream school.

I'm GC too.

This is a totally impractical suggestion. The idea that Ofsted has the manpower or resources to vet every Twinkl worksheet or everything sold on TES is pretty laughable. There are thousands and thousands of charities, companies and individuals out there producing materials for schools. There is no way that they could all possibly be checked by Ofsted. I don’t disagree that children shouldn’t be presented with resources that reinforce stereotypes or that are generally poor quality but it’s up to schools to check the materials that they are using. Anything else is just not realistic.

saraclara · 25/07/2021 12:24

Absolutely unworkable. Your can't pick and choose which of the those of outside providers will be checked, and while OFSTED is so behind that some schools haven't been inspected for eight years, expecting them to find the resources to check all those thousands of resource providers is about as unreasonable as it gets.

I agree that this is unworkable as presented. However, sometimes petitions are as much about sending a message and registering concern. So, IMHO no harm and only good can come from signing it.

In the meantime, maybe a more workable proposal can be drafted? If not by Conservatives for Women twitter.com/CforWomenUK then someone else?
