May I ask a question? I'm not in the UK, but I'd think if the press are able to publish a name, it will only be after the suspect is charged, so they will get the information (including sex of the suspect) from the court records. If it's before any charge is laid, won't it be a more general comment (e.g., "three women have been detained for questioning") relying on police records? So is the issue really with the press, or with the police and courts? Or am I missing some nuance?
If I were to show up in the UK and commit a crime and be questioned by the police, I'd think that they would check my self-supplied information such as name, address, country of citizenship, etc. Do they really not? And if they don't, then can I (or anyone else) not simply say that I am six years old and therefore too young to be arrested?
