Please register your dismay and approval being given to shoot these native nesting birds who are already under pressure from habitat removal and pesticides.

Here is the link to the petition. Please sign and share with family and friends.

I haven't read anything about this. Can you link to the details?

Hepsibar · 13/01/2020 20:57

Hi , Can you click in the link on my original post?

I just signed this, how horrible. I love garden birds but we are very blasé about them and we need to protect them

Trewser · 13/01/2020 21:03

Can you find some information about this because it sounds very unlikely.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 13/01/2020 21:06

I know some of the developers cover trees/bushes to prevent the birds nesting which is bad enough. Would they really get a licence to actually kill them?

AhoyMrBeaver · 13/01/2020 21:08

Yes, but that's just a link to the petition. I haven't read anything about the reason behind the protest - that's what I wanted to read. Do you have a link?

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 13/01/2020 21:08

I remember signing a petition about the netting recently. That was awful.

Why are the birds shot, what sort of danger can they be?

Trewser · 13/01/2020 21:16

I can't believe 12k people.have signed that Confused

funkyllama · 14/01/2020 08:27

Councils and developers are responsible for various reasons.

www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/advice/gardening-for-wildlife/plants-for-wildlife/garden-hedges/hedge-law/

I sometimes think we are fighting a losing battle and will end up with nothing but a sterile, concrete environment that nothing lives in.

Trewser · 14/01/2020 08:30

Our village and the farms around it stick strictly to a hedge cutting schedule. They are funded hugely by the local shoot though so...

Still no info about developers being alowed to shoot wrens (must be bloody good shots!) and sparrows...

Hepsibar · 14/01/2020 11:55

I think I was over-anxious when I used the word "shoot", so apologies but here is more info:

"Natural England and Natural Resources Wales have given the go-ahead for nesting birds such as robins, starlings, blackbirds and bullfinches to be shot, in spite of these birds being protected by law. They argue that it is being done as the birds pose a ‘threat to public health and air safety’. However, it is obvious that it is merely because nesting birds slow down building operations. Please prevent the issuing of these licences by adding your name to the over 176,815 who have signed."

Yes apologies, ... it is the nest sites that are being allowed to be destroyed, shouldnt have used word "shoot" ... although same end result I guess.

Have you got a link to any thing that isn't what the petition says?

Trewser · 14/01/2020 12:21

Because i think yes, they are allowed to issue licences to cull birds who are a threat to air safety. Which I support.

Trewser · 14/01/2020 12:22

However, it is obvious that it is merely because nesting birds slow down building operations

Why and where is it obvious?

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 14/01/2020 14:26

I’ve signed.

Hate greedy developers who only think of their bloody profit.

Trewser · 14/01/2020 14:26

Where is the link to information saying that developers are shooting birds?

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 14/01/2020 14:30

OP corrected herself. She didn’t mean to use shoot.

Let it go.
