It’s high time to licence all road-going bicycles

WATCH HERE:

Newly-formed pedestrian rights organisation Pedestrians Have Rights Too launches today a petition supporting calls by Professor The Lord Winston, the Labour peer and television presenter, to introduce licence plates for all road-going bicycles in the UK.

Last year, there were 18,000 serious incidents involving cyclists on Britain's roads, with serious injuries topping 3,000, more than 100 deaths and 300 reported collisions with pedestrians.

not a chance. What a waste of public money and it will be a barrier to people cycling.

I'd rather the police went after all the lunatics driving (especially motorbikes) and polluting the atmosphere.

GinUp · 09/04/2019 13:54

You would probably get more support if you were a little less misleading with your figures.

Those more than 100 deaths were not pedestrians killed by cyclists. A more typical figure for that would be around 2 or 3 such deaths per year, and we don't usually know what the cause of the accident was unless it was a particularly high profile case.

You lose all credibility when you distort figures like this.

SciFiScream · 09/04/2019 13:58

Not a good idea OP.
Children's bikes are road going (though may not be used on the road - that's a whole other discussion) should they be licenced too? It's not practical, workable. It's too expensive to administer and run.

We need better training for drivers and cyclists.

All children should be given the opportunity to go on a Bikeability course - giving skills for life. Also taught how to cycle safely on the road and near pedestrians. Not all pavements are pedestrian only (difference between footway, footpath, corepath) etc.

"We need better training for drivers and cyclists. "

This ☝🏻

greenelephantscarf · 09/04/2019 15:18

too few people cycle.
better include bike safety more in the driving tests and make driving more expensive as an incentive.

John470322 · 09/04/2019 15:19

No chance as it would stop children cycling. I would ban cycling on pavements. I do cycle but on the road or cycle paths never on the pavement

megletthesecond · 09/04/2019 15:21

Can't they crack down on bad drivers first? I walk almost everywhere and estimate at least 10% of drivers are fiddling or looking at their phones.
I won't cycle on the roads as it's too dangerous.
I cycle slowly on empty paths, loads of them as most people drive anyway these days. I get off in busy areas near shops and schools.

Vitalogy · 09/04/2019 16:14

I want more cyclists not less. So I won't be signing.

PlatypusPie · 09/04/2019 16:26

No, for all the reasons PPs have given .

But you seem to be mixing up licensing the bicycles and the cyclists, anyway . Are you looking for mechanical adequacy of the bike or competence of the cyclist ? . A car has to be licenced and pass an MOT - completely separately, a driver has to pass a driving test. Which do you want ?

Your figures are dodgy interpretations anyway, but the number of injuries or deaths caused by bike mechanical failures rather than bad road sense must be tiny.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 10/04/2019 14:25

Drivers who also cycle have been shown to be safer drivers. Maybe we should have a scheme to force people to cycle a certain amount before they can apply for a drivers license...

FunkyKingston · 11/04/2019 20:05

Yes, cyclists are definitely the problem here, this is just the latest in a depressing parade of stories where criminally negligent dribers effectively get a free pass for killing a cyclist through incompetence

road.cc/content/news/259117-12-month-ban-pensioner-who-didnt-see-cyclist-she-killed-until-he-was-her-bonnet

This woman should never be behind the wheel of a car again and should be spending tonight and many ither nights in jail, yet she gets little more than a slap on the wrist.

This is far from an isolated incident and ptoof that id you're behind the wheel of a car it's open season to take out xyclists virtually consequence free.
