The following petition needs just 4 signatures to be published on the parliament website. If you agree with it please follow the link to sign:

PETITION: Redesign the taxation system to support families with children

Give families the option to be taxed on their combined household income and design a tax free allowance as a function of the number of people who depend on that income. Single-earner families and single-parents carry the highest effective burden of the tax which is an unfair and short sighted policy

With an aging population, we need children who will be the taxpayers of the future. Our tax system should therefore support and encourage families to have children, not make it unaffordable. Children are currently the population sector most likely to be in poverty, while single adults without children enjoy some of the lowest tax rates in the developed world. The existing system with child benefit and child tax credits is unfair and cumbersome. A tax system that includes an option of combined household income is common sense and is the standard in most countries in the western world.

More background on this petition:

Children are the demographic group most likely to be below the poverty line:
www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/child-poverty-increase-children-family-benefit-households-a8268191.html

Our aging population is a well known problem. Today's children are tomorrow's taxpayers, who will be supporting the NHS, pension and benefit system and keep the country running. It is short sighted to place the highest effective tax burden on families and make having children unaffordable.

The current child benefit system is cumbersome and unfair. Most countries in the western world give families the option to be taxed on the combined household income (with a separe tax allowance and tax brackets) or to be taxed individually. The combined income tax allowance and tax brackets are calculated to strike a balance between taxing families too much or too little compared to single taxpayers, while taking into account how many people live of that income.
