AIBU to think that 61 days in prison for killing someone is an insult?

In December 2016, a friend of mine, Andy Lindup was run over and left to die in the road by the man who hit him. He was 36.

The person responsible hid his van with its broken windscreen caused when he hit my friend and kept it to himself for a fortnight until he was traced by police.

Because he left the scene, that's all he could be charged with as other evidence (drinking for example) couldn't be proven.
As a result, he was given 4 months in prison and served only 61 days. For taking a life.

Andy's family are campaigning to get the law changed so that leaving the scene carries the same sentence as death by dangerous driving. The way the law is at the moment, there is almost an incentive to drive away.

The petition is here petition.parliament.uk/petitions/208008

And some more detail about the case and the campaign from Andy's dad here: eveshamobserver.co.uk/news/hit-and-run-family-in-sentence-review-call/

Please sign the petition, this crime is tragically so common and devastates so many lives and the sentences given out are a joke and an insult to grieving families.
It's not the judges and the police at fault, the man who killed Andy was given the maximum sentence for that charge, it's the law that's wrong.

Thank you for reading and for signing and feel free to share on Facebook/Twitter/anywhere else to help raise the profile of this campaign.

SIgned. I can’t believe he only got a 14 month driving ban as well. This was a deliberate action, he chose for every one of those days after the crash to continue to hide from the police. She should be banned for life from driving as well as 14 years in prison.

Need to get someone with lots of followers on twitter to tweet it. This could literally affect any of us. In fact I do have a friend who lost a relative to a drunk driver. The driver was caught red handed and the sentence was still a joke.

OlennasWimple · 12/03/2018 14:27

Try tweeting it to someone like Andrew Gilligan (Sunday Time journalist, very keen cyclist)?

endofthelinefinally · 12/03/2018 14:29

Honestly, a thread about almost anything else would get more attention.
Very sad.

Andy's family have met with their MP about it, have had some local press interest (both in Enfield where Andy lived and in the midlands where he was from). The Daily Mail also picked it up and ran an article on it so I'm not sure why it hasn't got more signatures either. Andy was a really popular guy and all of his friends hand family have been signing and sharing so I thought it would be a higher number than this by now.

Though I'm grateful for everyone on mumsnet who have signed it and who have shared it and who keep bumping this thread Smile

I know 2 people who were killed by dangerous drivers and one left seriously disabled.
I have witnessed appalling behaviour on the roads.
IME police are not interested. Presumably because there is no point in prosecuting.
In the wrong hands a vehicle is potentially a lethal weapon, like a gun.

Have you contacted RoadPeace OP?

Steaksauce · 12/03/2018 14:37

@endofthelinefinally no I haven't, is that a charity? I've not heard of them.

Sounds daft but I am conscious that this is Andy's family's campaign so although I'm doing what I can to help I'm reluctant to get pushed into the spotlight and take anything away from them.
I miss my friend but my sorrow and anger over this will be nothing compared to what they are going through.
