How about we all work really hard to make Brexit as good as it can be, in a united way?
How about we all support Hitler? Or Putin? Or Fascism?
No, ta. As long as there is breath in my body, I support us not leaving the EU, and the minute, the second we've left, I'll be campaigning to re-join. And we will.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 28/01/2018 18:38

How about we all support Hitler?

This is how ridiculous and offensive this whole Brexit debate has got.

onalongsabbatical · 28/01/2018 18:46

The EU, above anything, was set up in the wake of WW2 as a project of peace, progress and co-operation. I'm 63. I was alive in the 50s and 60s, and I saw the aftermath of the trauma of war, not least in my own family.
Please don't call my support of the EU and citing the wider picture ridiculous and offensive.

As someone with Jewish family some of who were killed in the Holocaust and some which survived, please don't tell me not to say when I think something is moronic when I believe it is.

Thank you.

Except that it wasn't. The EEC or 'common market' was set up in 1957.

The EU was founded in 1993

I'm not signing. Remainers didn't convince me before and they're even further away from convincing me now.

Godwin's law in action
But in this case there is a legitimate connection.

As Wiki correctly says:
"After World War II, European integration was seen as an antidote to the extreme nationalism which had devastated the continent.[31] In a speech delivered on 19 September 1946 at the University of Zürich, Switzerland, Winston Churchill postulated the emerging of a United States of Europe during the 20th century.[32] The 1948 Hague Congress was a pivotal moment in European federal history, as it led to the creation of the European Movement International and of the College of Europe, where Europe's future leaders would live and study together.[33] 1952 saw the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, which was declared to be "a first step in the federation of Europe."[34] The supporters of the Community included Alcide De Gasperi, Jean Monnet, Robert Schuman, and Paul-Henri Spaak.[35] These men and others are officially credited as the Founding fathers of the European Union."

Since those early moves towards a union there has been an unprecedented period of peace between the countries of western Europe. While the EU exists, another war is simply unthinkable.
Long may it continue!

I'd sign if I thought it would help but it won't.

All us remainers (and people who voted leave but now see that they were hoodwinked) can do is sit it out and hope that the people in charge make good decisions about our future out of the EU.

Who knows, it may still turn out for the best... but then I've always been an optimist Smile

@GladAllOver thank you for posting that, I would have done a similar post, but I lost heart for a bit.

I had a family member killed fighting Germany in WW1, and another who fortunately survived fighting Germany in both wars.

One of the reasons I am a strong supporter of the EU is that those disastrous European conflicts must never, ever happen again .

onalongsabbatical · 29/01/2018 13:18

Exactly. For me, it's not really about economic issues, important as they are. It's about a united and peaceful Europe moving towards the ideal of a united and peaceful planet.
