Periods - Please help. This is wrong!

Hi All,

Today, I heard about a 13yr old girl who ended up in hospital because she used socks instead of pads when on her period - she couldn't afford sanitary products. This is not acceptable in the UK, but it's happening and it's happening in 2017.

Please can you sign this petition to eradicate period poverty from schools. Sanitary provision is NOT a luxury, and periods are not a choice.

It's just totally, totally wrong!!! Girls should have to choose between their education and their period.

This petition to provide free sanitary products to girls from low income families was started by a 17yr old girl.

We should support her will to help other schoolgirls! It only takes 15 seconds to sign, I know because I just did it.

Please share so we can change this appalling situation. As a mum of three teenagers, I feel really moved to help. I hope you do too

I've signed and shared on FB and sent a WA to all my contacts to sign and share too.

I'm outraged that this is happening. Those poor girls - as if being a teenager isn't the worst thing in the world in any case, to have to deal with this is just so completely wrong.

And you're so right. This wouldn't be happening if men had periods! No way!

HealthVisitorNorth · 17/04/2017 20:35

Sadly I was one of those girls. I couldn't afford sanpro and I used to stay at home when I was on. Quite a lot in fact. I told a teacher once and she bought in some sanpro for me but I can't believe it's still happening today. It's not right and it's not fair.

Signed and just shared petition link

Signed and shared.
As a mother of a teenage girl and remembering how awful those early days of periods and school days were for myself this makes me feel so sad.

Orange I would bet my life that if men had periods this would not be an issue.

MandemMandem · 17/04/2017 21:48

I've signed and shared too.

I find this dreadfully sad. These girls really need a lifeline. I'm also a mum to three teenagers and it's such a tough stage in their lives but to have to deal with the trials of period poverty alone as a child is just heartbreaking.

Healthvisitornorth, I'm so sad to read what you wrote.

MandemMandem · 17/04/2017 21:49

OhCarrieMathieson! What a cracking name. My hubby is a diehard Homeland fan and your name made me chuckle!

Vegansnake · 17/04/2017 21:54

my mum could only afford cheap own brand ones, the pads were like duvet thick and had one tiny strip in the middle that lost its stickiness after an hour. they were so uncomfortable, i use to feel it riding up towards my back and paranoid people could see the thick pad outline in tight school trousers. i was so embarrassed and stressed. i cant imagine how upset these girls are with no choice but to use a sock Sad glad something is being done.

MandemMandem · 17/04/2017 22:16

That's a great idea. How do we get MNHQ to do that? Any ideas?

MandemMandem · 17/04/2017 22:20

Happyfrown, I'm with you. It's soul destroying. It's such a terrible situation and the concerning thing is that missing school disadvantages the girls further so escaping from poverty becomes less likely.

I've shared on FB and Tweeted too. Also shared on text.

I think it's a brilliant idea too to give this more publicity.
But I'm now how to do it either!

happyfrown · 17/04/2017 22:27

i think you click report thread and ask to move it.

OrchidBloom · 17/04/2017 22:29

I think we can send a mail to: [email protected]
I don't know how to tag- I'm useless!

annabelharrison · 18/04/2017 10:02

I've just reported the post to see if they can move it to a more visible spot!
Let's see what happens!

LornaMumsnet · 18/04/2017 10:14

Hi OP,

We're just sending this thread over to our petitions noticeboard.

We've emailed you!

annabelharrison · 18/04/2017 12:06

Well, that didn't go too well... They've moved us to Petitions so I think it's even less visible now! Oh dear...

What does everyone think? Should I start a new thread somewhere else? Any ideas where would get the most views?

LornaMumsnet · 18/04/2017 12:24

Hi, annabelharrison.

We're really sorry - we only allow petition links to be posted in the petitions topic.

SunsetsAndChampers · 18/04/2017 14:00

Ok, so it got pushed to Petitions, but it's such an important issue that we can all spread the word about and make sure it's shared and signed. Right?

We really shouldn't be accepting this situation in 2017 and we should be helping these poor girls get help.

NeverTooMuchCake · 18/04/2017 14:05

I agree - I've already signed but i'll keep sharing.

Florida28 · 18/04/2017 14:27

Signed and shared on FB. Such an important issue!

annabelharrison · 18/04/2017 14:40

Thank you. It really is so important. The more of us that sign, the greater chance of helping these girls who clearly are desperate.

user1492451808 · 18/04/2017 14:59

I've signed this and shared on FB too.
Agreed that this needs to be highlighted further.
Can't it be moved somewhere else to get more attention?
