AIBU to ask you all to please sign Lucy Gavaghan's petition on caged hen farming in UK?

Hi everyone!

Firstly, I'm not sure if anything about this has been posted about before so I'm sorry to spam you all if you've already signed!

I've been following petitions on change.org set up by Lucy Gavaghan, who's campaigning to end caged hen farming in the UK. She's 14, and became interested in finding out about the welfare of hens in the UK after adopting hens rescued from battery farms. Her latest petition calls for a complete ban on UK caged hen farming.

I suppose my AIBU here is: am I being unreasonable to please ask you all to sign and share this petition (and to please ask everyone you know to sign and share it too)?

Here's a link to the petition on change.org:

Thank you so much everyone!! Smile

I completely agree with this petition, but I don't agree with using Mumsnet as a platform to get more exposure to a petition, sorry.

If we all do this then Active Conversations would be 100% petitions all the time.

Did you sign, Growing? Grin

I signed this a while ago and will always share it. There is NO excuse to opt for caged hen eggs over free range. So it's 20p or so more? Big deal. Suck it up or forgo the eggs.
My SIL gave me a dozen eggs recently and when I got them home I noticed they were caged hen eggs. I had no idea what to do with them. I needed eggs for a recipe and the shops were shut. It really bothered me.

Thanks SO much everyone! Please do keep up the good work of signing and sharing :)

Bibbity I see exactly where you're coming from and I do agree with what you're saying.

The reason why I felt that it was crucial to post about this petition here is because I feel that the welfare of egg-laying hens is a very important issue that affects most of the population. Most of our population eats eggs in some shape or form. Out of the people who consciously decide not to eat eggs, many choose not to eat them because of concerns about the welfare of egg-laying hens in the UK.

I understand as well that this may not be the most pressing issue facing the UK or the world at the moment. However, I do feel - and I'm sure that many people will agree - that the welfare of animals reared for meat, eggs and dairy in the UK and around the world has been overlooked for too long.

I hope very much that this petition will help us all to make positive changes to the way we treat and consider animals who are bred for meat, eggs and dairy in the UK - and soon hopefully around the world.

Done!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 30/08/2016 07:51

I agree with all of that and have insisted on free range eggs and meat for me and my own family ever since they became available - so in the case of eggs I'm guessing 30 years.

It is of course an excellent cause but I don't understand why you think your petition is more deserving of attention than any other?

SkydivingFerret · 30/08/2016 08:04

Bibbity has a point...there is a petition section on mn so they're not clogging up the other boards

growingbytheday · 30/08/2016 10:25

ohfourfoxache signed!
I don't know what or how I did that but am very proud of my output Grin

Thank you so much everyone for continuing to sign and share! Smile Please keep up the signing and sharing good work!

SkydivingFerret thanks for letting me know about the Petitions section of MN. I didn't realise that this already existed - if I had known, I would have posted this on their messageboard. I remember seeing an MN member post a petition on AIBU a couple of months ago, so I thought that AIBU may be a good place to start to raise awareness of this petition.

Bibbity I don't think for a moment that this petition is necessarily more deserving of attention than any other cause - I simply felt that it was extremely important to raise awareness of it. At the time of posting it on MN, AIBU seemed to me like the most logical place to spread the word.

OP, I would actually get this moved into the Petitions topic (report your op and MNHQ will move it for you) as lots of people have the AIBU topic hidden.

RangeTesKopeks · 30/08/2016 13:05

Thanks RiverTam - I'll let MNHQ know! Smile

"My SIL gave me a dozen eggs recently and when I got them home I noticed they were caged hen eggs. I had no idea what to do with them. I needed eggs for a recipe and the shops were shut. It really bothered me."

mykids, in that case, you use the eggs. The damage is done at the point of sale.

Eating caged eggs isn't going to do you any harm (I am talking in terms of ethics, not antibiotics etc etc which is a different though equally important issue). The problem is buying caged eggs. Hats essentially casting a vote for more caged eggs. That is, rightly or wrongly, what your SIL did when she bought them. But it would be ghastly to simply throw the eggs away once you have them in your possession - would do no good for the hens, would make a mockery of the eggs they had produced, and you would still need to get more eggs. Which would be bad, as we should all be aiming to buy as few animal products as possible

RangeTesKopeks · 30/08/2016 13:35

Thank you DeadGood!

Hi there,
we've moved this to Petitions as you requested! (and signed).

DeadGood · 31/08/2016 22:40

And this is why people don't post this sort of thing in Petitions! Literally not a single reply since it was moved.
