This title may sound over-exaggerated, but it is very, very true. Asbestos exposure is fatal, as it causes incurable, agonising mesothelioma, an inflammation of the lung's lining. Asbestos also causes lung cancer, which also means death in most cases. But the UK government refuses to act and remove all asbestos, instead leaving teachers and pupils to contract the illnesses.

Asbestos is found in 75% of British schools, that's 7 million school children, and teachers, at risk of Asbestos exposure. At risk, of a painful, premature death. This MUST stop.
Parents have been kept in the dark about Asbestos for too long, as the government brush the effects of the fatal substance under the carpet.

Now you have read this post, please do your duty as a parent, whatever part of the world you live in, whatever school your child goes to - protect your children, and millions of children and teachers nationwide by signing this petition: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/protect-our-children-and-teachers-from-asbestos-exposure-in-schools

Please, do your duty as a parent, and protect the lives of millions of children across Britain. Thank you.

I'm sorry that you've lost family members and I can see that that must make this all very emotive for you. But no contractor of any sort will set foot in a school building in the UK without having signed something to say he/she has read what's often called the asbestos register (or a document giving the location and condition of any asbestos). There just isn't the money to remove it all - but there is a lot of good health and safety practice around it.

I've heard there's asbestos in the Pokeman go balls.

This is an issue v close to my heart. My mum died of mesothelioma which is a horrendous lung cancer caused by breathing in asbestos. She has no idea how she caught it. She worked in old schools which the doctor said was the most likely place. I've following lots of stories on mesothelioma. One was of a teacher who got it. She had been using tacs to hang up pupils work at her school. That small pin disturbed the asbestos. You only have to inhale one tiny fibre of it. It can sit in your system for years before it becomes active. The consultants have said that it will be a much more common illness as the years go by as those people who worked with it without any protection are starting to get it.

It would have been my mum's 74th birthday today. She was fit, healthy and never smoked or drunk. It was v unfair that she had to get this illness and die in the most horrendous way so please sign this petition.

Can I suggest you invest in some FFP3 dust masks white over suits with booties and some gloves and leave the rest of us idiots to live our asbestos fuelled lives in peace

AyeAmarok · 15/07/2016 19:01

FFS. Stop scaremongering.

It's only dangerous if it's dislodged by being broken up and the dust particles get inhaled.

It's safer leaving it where it is.

Ridiculous post.

PotteringAlong · 15/07/2016 19:02

If it's 75% of all schools and 100% of people in the U.K. have to go to school are you really suggesting that 75% of the population will be at risk / contract asbestosis? Because the asbestos has been in school for years and 75% of the population over the age of 16 do not have the disease. Nowhere close.

spacefrog35 · 15/07/2016 19:05

How many people do you think will be killed by the fibres that will be released when we start scrapping tonnes of asbestos out of our schools unnecessarily. Yes, it's very harmful but only when disturbed so how about we don't disturb it Hmm

HWatk · 15/07/2016 19:21

Do you understand the definition of the word risk?

MewlingQuim · 15/07/2016 19:40

So that 250+ dead teachers figure comes from 'research' carried out by the husband of a teacher who sadly died of mesothelioma.

Meanwhile in the same link, the HSE says that teachers do not have a higher incidence of mesothelioma than other public sector professionals.

Gosh I'm convinced Hmm

SaggyNaggy · 15/07/2016 19:44

Jeez op, ypu think that's a danger? How about Dihydrogen monoxide:

is also known as hydroxyl acid, and is the major component of acid rain.
contributes to the "greenhouse effect".
may cause severe burns.
contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:

as an industrial solvent and coolant.
in nuclear power plants.
in the production of styrofoam.
as a fire retardant.
in many forms of cruel animal research.
in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.

MewlingQuim · 15/07/2016 20:01

The graph in that link looks decidedly dodgy. I do wonder if Mr Lees may not be a scientist/statistician/mathematician.
