A ‘fairer’ EU Referendum would include students aged 16/17 - petition approval pending: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/138061/moderation-info

Any UK EU Referendum should include students aged 16/17 as in Scottish Referendum. Petition approval pending: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/138061/moderation-info

For fucks sake just give it a rest

The process was sun in a proper democratic way and should not be re-run just because you don't like the result

hubris · 27/06/2016 01:41

Please pack in this anti-democratic sour grapes.

Oh and on a pedantic note, what about 16/17 year olds who aren't students? Not educated enough to deserve a vote perhaps? Might use it 'wrongly'?

STIDW · 27/06/2016 02:50

I'm not a fan of referenda, I've voted in 6 & none resolved the issue. However I do support votes for 16/17 year olds. They are old enough to under the implications of a decision. Unfortunately a re-run is extremely unlikely so the petitions are more about making a point.

The referendum was unfair because;-

politicians exaggerate & spin but not since the 1950s has the UK’s destiny been decided by politicians who knowingly made incontrovertible lies the first plank of their campaign.

Just5minswithDacre · 27/06/2016 03:01

...because you didn't like the result. Yeah we know. Yadda yadda yadda.

The thing is that when you're a grown up, you have to live with a LOT of election results thatyou seriously dislike. Election results that are depressing, that you think will cause all sorts of horrible outcomes and disasters. You HAVE to respect the democratic decision, whichever side of the result you're on.

Because grown ups realise that democracy is the most important thing that we have.

Just5minswithDacre · 27/06/2016 03:02

And this should be in petitions.

But it's unfair & undemocratic when politicians knowingly make incontrovertible lies the first plank of their campaign.

Nigel Farage said the £350m a week emblazoned across the Vote Leave campaign's bus & the pledge it would fund the NHS was "a mistake" just a few hours after the referendum result.

Many voted for Brexit on the back of Vote Leave’s claim they would slash net migration. The day after the referendum Daniel Hannan says Brexit voters will be ‘disappointed’ if they think there will now be zero immigration from EU because the freedom of the movement of labour would not end.

trafalgargal · 27/06/2016 04:40

If the 18-21 vote was low what's the point in extending it down to 16 . If it was high you might have a point ......but it wasn't and hasn't been.

nagynolonger · 27/06/2016 05:36

Why are so many people certain that 16 and 17 year olds would vote remain even if they had the vote? Maybe they would in the SE and London.

In large areas of the north and the shire counties this age group will feel the same as older voters. They have grown up in areas were much less is spent per head on education. They see their communities really struggle.
There are no signs saying 'This was provided by EU funding' because nothing is.

A4Document · 27/06/2016 09:56

What does Nigel Farage have to do with it? He isn't an MP and was not connected to the official Leave campaign. He is in no position to spread misinformation about how the government will/won't use the budget after the 2-year leave period is up.

Daniel Hannan says Brexit voters will be ‘disappointed’ if they think there will now be zero immigration from EU because the freedom of the movement of labour would not end.

The 1992 Maastricht Treaty, when Major was PM and in which Juncker played a significant part, brought in freedom of movement of all people, rather than the free movement of workers i.e. people who had a job to come to. So yes, there should be an Australian type points system for economic migrants.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 27/06/2016 09:57

because 2 countries from 4 in the UK didnt vote for it

Joysmum · 27/06/2016 10:04

Make me laugh, younger people had the lowest turnout of the voting populous and are the ones feeling most aggrieved!

The older generation will have a more immediate concern of leaving than the younger generation as its their pension pots that are being affected now.

Many is the time that the party I voted for didn't get into power. Not once have I called for another general election.

JamieVardysParty · 27/06/2016 10:41

Still waiting for the petition to block all those 65+ from voting ever again.

The sooner everyone drops this petition nonsense and get on with a constructive response to the current situation, the better.

Yes, but no other politician has knowingly made incontrovertible lies & misrepresented key policies since Anthony Eden conspired & lied to Parliament.

Hear hear. We have the opportunity to shape our own country, and influence our laws, so let's get on with it. If everyone picked just one thing they'd like the government to consider (e.g. NHS funding, workers rights etc) and wrote to their MP about it, it would be a good lot of democracy going on.

You're joking? (Seriously, I'm asking. Are you? I can't tell any more on here this week.)

STIDW · 28/06/2016 15:13

And George Osborne originally said the immediate result of a leave vote would be an emergency "punishment budget" which he now claims isn't necessary at all,

Can’t believe I’m defending George Osborne but he has only revised the timing, not his proposal. On 15/6/16 he said he would aim to introduce emergency measures within a couple of months of a Leave vote to fill a permanent & structural blackhole in public finances of £30bn predicted by the IFS. Yesterday he announced the Emergency Budget will be delayed until a new Prime Minister is in place this autumn. The figures may be revised but the core principal for tax rises & cuts in public spending is still on the agenda.
