Petitions and activism

I'm disappointed in you lot - speak up against FGM

I started this thread a while ago asking for people to sign a petition which calls for the home office to create and enforce a coherent national strategy to eradicate female genital mutilation (FGM) in the UK.

The petition needs around 11,000 more petitions to get debated in parliament. It takes just a few seconds to sign and if every MN member did so I think the petition would reach the required 100,000 signatures in no time.

More than 66,000 women and girls in the UK have already undergone FGM, with almost 25,000 more girls at risk every year. FGM is classed as torture by the UN and can be fatal, it is practiced on girls and women of all ages from infancy right through to adulthood. We can stop this.

So what are you waiting for?

If you suspect a child is at risk of FGM the NSPCC has recently launched a national helpline

Number for NSPCC FGM helpline: 0800 028 3550

Dedicated email address: [email protected].

If someone is in immediate danger you should call 999

Sorry OP I will sign but can I just ask if it's illegal to carry out FGM why is this petition needed? Are people not prosecuted already? I will sign definitely I'm just not sure I understand completely the aim of it. There must be a 'coherent national strategy' already, no?

Hector it is already illegal, but I'm sure I read before that even though it's been illegal for 27 years, there has not been one conviction!

Thanks everyone.

Hector this documentary explains it very well if you have time to watch it, but basically FGM has been illegal in the UK since 1985 and there has not been a single conviction and girls are still being mutilated.

The recent funding put into stopping FGM in the UK only amounts to around £2 per girl at risk, the guidelines for teachers, midwives, social workers etc. are not obligatory reading and the authorities who could stop FGM before it happens are not working in coordination with each other, meaning that no-one really knows what's happening in other areas and tend to think that dealing with or reporting FGM is someone else's job.

Thank you OP I will take a look once DS is asleep. Not a single conviction for committing this crime is disgusting and shocking, I really had no idea. Anyone carrying out the act or allowing it to be carried out on any child/young woman should go to prison for a very long time.
