Saw this item on the local news this week and can't believe that as the law stands at the moment victims of domestic violence basically have to hand over their new/safe address to the courts to be read out in front of their abuser and shown on papers served to the abuser; listening to the woman in the ITV interview (it's linked to in the petition page) made me so mad for her. That she was put in a position where because she wanted to take a man guilty of horrendous abuse to court meant she was left with no option but to provide her safe address and within an hour of papers being served he was on her doorstep...

The petition has been started by a woman who is being threatened with imprisonment herself for being in contempt of court for refusing to provide the safe address that her and her children now live at, she's collected about 1000 signatures so far but I'm really hoping that by the power of Mumsnet we can get to the 1500 she needs. Thank you, brill idea - I see so many petition requests but not very often one like this where I can't imagine anyone not thinking "well yes, of course that's how it should be!" Don't know if you watched the interview attached but the fact that the woman has basically lived her life waiting to be murdered just made me so mad...

I will have to read some more about this. In this case I'm sure it was not her abuser she was being asked to disclose the address to but a mutual friend of the ex couple. That she was being sued for owing mutual friend a large amount of money. The insinuation was by withholding her address she would aviod the debt being recovered via bailiffs or a earnings order.

In cases of family law The address is never given out on case of dv. This case is different because she was acting criminally and dv partner wasnt the respondent. If the third party have put the address they would be breaking the law and face prison

But no the address shold never be given directly to violent partners

She had been convicted of a crime and was withholding her address. Are we saying that anyone who has experienced dv should be tried differently to those that have not? What about if she had been convicted of a violent crime, child abuse? Would we all agree that she should have the right to withhold her address

It was not her partner who was suing her. It was someone she thought might share it with ex p. They would both then be guilty of breaking the non mol and face jail.

Done. When I went into Women's refuge with my 2 yr old DS the Refuge address was a P.O.Box only address. This was acceptable on my divorce petition as I had a great legal aid solicitor. All women should have the right to address anonymity under these circumstances.
