To settle an argument, basically.

When writing about the law enforcement agency of the UK should you write:

The police were called on several occasions

or

The Police were called on several occasions

(I think the latter looks like you phoned Sting & chums but I'm happy to be corrected)

I'd say first but have no argument to back it up

PigeonPie · 24/06/2010 15:38

Iklboo - did you mean was and were? They look the same to me atm!

Iklboo · 24/06/2010 15:39

I meant police or Police

ah, sorry, just seen your initial cap. I think it would be the former, but am quite happy to be corrected.

trilliAnasTra · 24/06/2010 15:44

Please do call Sting and the Police, it'd be much more entertaining

Iklboo · 24/06/2010 15:44

Just done a shameless Wiki

The police....refers to law enforcement

The Police refers to the 80's band fronted by Sting

Thanks ladies

I'd go with police. Also army, government, etc. I think the only time I'd give them a capital would be if I was referring to their full title like the Lothian And Borders Police.

That's what I thought. Ha 'senior' colleague. Round 547 in the Grammar & Punctuation War goes to Iklboo (just like the other 546 rounds........)
