I thought I would post in here, at the risk of having my grammar/punctuation criticised, to ask for your opinions.

My husband is vehemently opposed to the use of the phrase "To give a toss" or even the use of the word "toss"

I uphold the belief that it relates to tossing a coin and he says that it means wanking.

He refuses to let me use it at all as he doesn't want the kids using "that kind of language"

Please cast your vote...Is it rude and masterbatory or perfectly harmless?

its kind of as rude as saying crap

lisbey · 02/04/2010 19:46

I think you're probably right about the actual meaning, but I wouldn't want my DCs using it.

TBH I wouldn't want to hear young children saying "I couldn't care less" either - shows disrepect IMO

I would never have thought of masturbation and think that's in his rude head

however I wouldn't let my children use that kind of language in front of me

ilovesprouts · 02/04/2010 20:00

to me it means dont care less

Hassled · 02/04/2010 20:01

I think technically you're right - the origins of the phrase aren't rude. It means you don't care enough to warrant placing a bet on it/tossing a coin.

But the phrase has evolved to become a bit risque, so your DH is also right.

Which means you should both apologise to each other and play nicely from now on.

EggentricaGallumbits · 02/04/2010 20:04

it has wanky connotations to me.

however you are a grown up and an independent woman. what you say, where and when is up to you and next time your DH 'refuses to let you use a turn of phrase' call him a cunting wanker and see how he likes that.

doozle · 02/04/2010 20:09

I don't give a toss - not offensive at all.

To toss off - yes, quite rude.

NonnoMum · 02/04/2010 20:12

Bit too rude for kids...

Fine for grown ups in the pub...

Not to be said in front of grannies, although mine has started saying "she can't be arsed' quite a lot lately...

LOL EggentricaGallumbits

To be honest, I don't use the phrase. We saw a car with a sticker that said "Don't be tossers" and I think was reminding people not to litter.

He thought it was a disgusting sticker and somehow we ended arguing over the origins of the word toss and I said "like not giving a toss" and he was annoyed because DS was in the car.

I guess in the future I should stick to "I don't give a fuck"

Hassled is right. Time to play nice
