I am not sure if I am posting in the correct place, but I am curious as to what you call yours! And what does the name they give for each, say about a person? Thanks!

living room or front room

and sofa or settee and even couch if i get really northern about it

hf128219 · 16/03/2010 22:29

It's a Sitting Room and sofa to some and a Living Room and settee to others.

It's a Class giveaway - allegedly.

Rindercella · 16/03/2010 22:30

I love these threads - they bring out the inner snob in me!

Sitting room

Sofa

Never, ever a lounge or a couch.

TreeTrunkThighs · 16/03/2010 22:33

Living room and sofa here.

Portofino · 16/03/2010 22:34

Living room / sofa

hf128219 · 16/03/2010 22:34

We have a TV lounge.

chaostrulyreigns · 16/03/2010 22:35

Living room and sofa here too.

We also have a television not a telly.

chaostrulyreigns · 16/03/2010 22:36

Hell hf with your James Bond name.

Do you live in an Airport?

I am very intrigued (and I ask a lot of questions).

chaostrulyreigns · 16/03/2010 22:37

hello gah.

iggi999 · 16/03/2010 22:37

So which term is for which class then? And what if you have a working class seating-item, and a middle class room? I'm sure my MIL would know the answers!

GetOrfMoiLand · 16/03/2010 22:39

Upper class and upper middle - drawing room and sofa

Lower middle class - lounge and settee

Working class - parlour/front room and couch.

I would reckon anyway.

GetOrfMoiLand · 16/03/2010 22:40

I say sofa and sitting room.

Am common so have just disproved myu theories above

SixtyFootDoll · 16/03/2010 22:43

Living room and settee here

hf128219 · 16/03/2010 22:43

OK.

Upper class have a Drawing Room and B&W TV's in their bedrooms

Middle Class aspire to have sitting rooms and sofas -but have to pay interest free credit at Multiyork to get the right sofa

Lower Class have living rooms and conveniently positioned street lighting to save on electricity bills

You did ask

Granny23 · 16/03/2010 22:56

We have a front living room and a back livingroom. The computer is in the back LR and the front one has the TV and a SUITE! (think this makes me both working class and old.)

hf128219 · 16/03/2010 22:59

A suite??? Wow! You know what, I don't really care what people have as long as they have a roof over their heads.

chaostrulyreigns · 16/03/2010 23:01

Anyone willing to start on the supper/tea/dinner malarkey?

Or the napkin/serviette kerfuffle?

My DM has Hyacinth B tendencies.

Ponders · 16/03/2010 23:01

front room
sofa

Rindercella · 16/03/2010 23:04

Or, inspired by Granny23's nickname, how about Nan/Nanna/Gran/Granny/Grandma?

FiveOrangePips · 16/03/2010 23:05

We have a living room, it is a dining room/sitting room, we have a tiny kitchen - so we are just poor.

DS (5 yrs) calls the bookcase in the hall "the library".

hf128219 · 16/03/2010 23:05

It's Supper in PM
Tea is a soddin' drink
Dinner is something at a smart restaurant or party

Napkin.

Trust me!

akangarooloose · 16/03/2010 23:13

Right snobs, I used to say Lounge cos everyone else I knew did, until I was told how common I must be, so I started using Living/Sitting room, then got too lazy to be bothered.

And we have a 3 piece suite!

I hate all this snobbery!

Prosecco · 16/03/2010 23:18

Living room

Couch ( I thought it was Scottish not class related )

stealthsquiggle · 16/03/2010 23:20

Sitting room and sofa. Because that was what I was brought up with and I never thought to change it.

Shodan · 16/03/2010 23:21

We have a sitting room, in which there are two sofas. But I don't think that's a suite- you have to have an armchair for that, don't you?

And re napkins- I used to think it was 'correct' to say serviettes for paper napkins so I checked my copy of Debretts (I am terminally curious about strange things) and according to that it is napkins and ....... (drum roll) paper napkins!!

I do hate the word supper, for some reason.

And tea can also be a light repast at 4 o'clock with sandwiches and dainty little cakies.

And we have a Granny, Grandad, Grandma and Grandpa. But my GPs were Nanny and Grandad.

(Was that everything? Have I missed anything?)
