The sign in question is less than.

It is used to show non-count nouns.

The give away is "is" - 5 is less than 10.

You would need to nbe in a position where you could say "are" (there are fewer oranges in that bowl than in this") to say "fewer".

Purely grammatical question, v. little to do with maths. Or logic, for that matter.

And, yes, the sign SHOWN is "greater than" - but you are clearly talking about its opposite, which is "less than".

1.35 < 2 1.35 is less than 2 which makes sence.

Do not mix maths with English.
