I am proof reading an invitation to an event and this sentence is annoying me but I cannot think how else to write it.

Give your kids a ride on the most fantastic carousel in [town]

The most fantastic. It makes me shudder. How else can I put it? I have a mental block.

Thank you, Reality. That is the mostest fantastictestest answer that I could ever have hoped for.

I can't see a problem with "most fantastic". There could be many fantastic carousels in XTown, but some are less fantastic than others. Fantastic isn't a superlative - it's not like "most biggest".

Reality
I am proof reading for Americans. All their sentences make my head hurt and yet are almost correct. It is doing my head in. I don't like "kids" either

but but but... something about that sentence annoys me.

There are a lot of carousels and this is truly the ultimate fantastic carousel but how do I ,like, say that, like, without sounding like Alicia whatername in Naturally Blonde, like?

Give your kids a ride on the most awesome carousel in [town] dude

Hassled · 28/04/2009 21:33

That is good, Reality. We need lots of awesome, freakin' and man/dude references. And "like".

madlentileater · 28/04/2009 22:47

yesterday on R4 I heard a fascinating and erudite account of the use of 'like'.
There's a technical term for the function it has in language ...which I've forgotten.

senua · 28/04/2009 23:45

technical term

I didn't like the discussion on Latin - very patronising and unfabulous.

paisleyleaf · 28/04/2009 23:51

I think skip the "kids"
and just say "have a ride on......"

and then go into the awsomest, fantastical, super dooper stuff

campion · 29/04/2009 10:05

No help really but at the end of a rather mediocre meal in a very ordinary restaurant in the US recently the waitress asked if we'd enjoyed the meal.
' Yes, it was OK', I said in a low key way

She looked wistfully into space before responding ' Awesome'.

So there is no superlative you could use that would phase the Americans ( buddy).

senua · 29/04/2009 10:15

faze

campion · 29/04/2009 13:11

Oops! On pedants' corner, too.

( Blames jet lag )

madlentileater · 29/04/2009 18:50

thanks for that senua, I must have missed the latin bit.

senua · 30/04/2009 12:01

mle.

campion. I only pointed it out because you are a fellow pedant; I wouldn't have dared to pass comment on a 'normal' thread.

campion · 30/04/2009 13:13

Ooh... no offence taken, senua. I would have been disappointed if you hadn't.
