I had to have a giggle at my lovely friend the other day. Not only did she describe someone as being 'lapsidaisy', but she also said they'd taken 'humbridge' at something. Thankfully she can laugh at her self so wasn't offended when I corrected her!

What mispronunciations have you heard...and do you correct people?

My mum says 'arctic' lorry

HeadFairy · 21/04/2009 21:51

I had a friend who pronounced deodorant as day-oh-door-ant.

I thought clarins was pronounced Cla-ran, but in French. I tend not to say it that way as it sounds a bit poncey.

My great aunt was French but had lived in the UK all her life, so had English accent but always insisted on calling Concorde, Can-card as the French would (I bet she would have said Cla-ran too)

Not really a mispronounciation is it...?

A friend's mum, years ago, who said they were going on holiday in their ka-RAV-en. Took me ages to work out what they were on about.

My mum says garaaahge for garage.

thumbwitch · 21/04/2009 22:19

this could be either a malapropism or a mispronunciation depending on your perspective:
using the word "dribble" instead of "drivel" (as in, he talks a lot of dribble)

Infuriating!

Sheeta · 21/04/2009 22:19

My boss was absolutely convinced that it was 'Chimbly', rather than 'Chimey'

Was mortified when I corrected him

tigerdriver · 21/04/2009 22:19

tigerdriver · 21/04/2009 22:22

Correctly, of course

Sawyer64 · 21/04/2009 22:24

Ibuprofen is the "Chemical" name, and Brufen is the Brand name.Don't see Brufen so much now, just Nurofen.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 21/04/2009 22:26

I always struggle saying orangutan.

I think I grew up saying organgatang and that last "G" has stuck.

Caz10 · 21/04/2009 22:27

Things I am not sure of -

Nike - is it "nyke" or "nyk-ee"?
Peugeot - I say Pew-geeo too - it sounds weird when I hear people say Per-geeeo - but then I am Scottish if that has anything to do with it!?!
Addidas - "ah-DEEE-das" or "ah-dee-das"?

Always PMSL at the memory of girl at uni who purposely pronounced envisage "on-veee-saaaage" - hard to spell but sort of like with a French accent - she was deadly serious about it too.

I was brought up to say 'garaaage', but DP laughed, and when I checked my dictionary, the pronunciation guide said it should be 'garridge' and I have retrained myself (still say garaaaage when alone with parents though, as I know garridge infuriates my mother!!).

DP insists on chimley for chimmney and will not be corrected (I cringe frequently at this, as he has to talk about 'chimleys' quite a bit for work).

edam · 21/04/2009 22:31

We knew we'd moved back to Yorkshire when someone came replied to our ad in the paper about the car for sale. 'Ey oop, Am 'ere about the Pew-gott'.

purplemunkey · 21/04/2009 22:38

Adidas is named after the company founder Adi (Adolf)Dassler so I'd imagine is simply Ah-di-das rather that Ah-DEE-das

YesSirICanBoogie · 21/04/2009 22:40

My pet hate is journalists who say "Seck-eh-try" instead of secretary. It happens all the time on the Scottish news programmes.

BettySwollux · 21/04/2009 22:45

Dhs uncle pronounces pedestrian 'ped-es-tree-an'

EachPeachPearMum · 21/04/2009 23:03
