Years of Age?

Is it acceptable to use this form? e.g. "he was 12 years of age". Perhaps I should post on AIBU but why does this sound wrong to me while 12 years old, or simply 12, doesn't?

It sounds correct but a little clumsy and old fashioned.

pippibluestocking · 07/04/2009 18:44

Sounds okay to me but being a pedant, I would say it should be "he was twelve years of age".

I'm with Califrau - why bother with the 'of age' bit? I mean he was twelve years old works perfectly well, doesn't it?

I've never liked this phrase.

PortAndLemon · 07/04/2009 19:15

I suspect that it's a technically correct form, but I am still annoyed by it.

Thank you Califrau, what does GAH mean?
I'm glad I'm not the only one ranting at the radio or t.v.
I wasn't suggesting that I use it, but that it drives me bonkers, along with "looking to" instead of planning or intending to.

Pippi, please excuse my errors, I'm only a part time pedant!
