Assignment - quoting someone and then giving an example I've come up with

I am talking about someone else's work, and I then highlight it with an exaple that is mine.

"X and Y argue that reducing health inequalities can be cost effective. For example..."
The example is one I have come up with - how can I emphasise that in the wording?

Thanks

Why not put your example first then put them later. Saying' this idea reflects/highlights/is illustrated by the argument put forward by X and Y ...'

edam · 29/03/2009 17:19

Um... 'I have discovered/I have learnt?' If you just follow the first sentence with 'for example' it does imply this is their example. You need a sentence in between the X and Y one and your example, to introduce your idea.

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2009 17:32

Sorry to be a pain but neither really work. I am talking about a long list of their arguments and want to use an example I have come up with to illustrate one in particular.

'for example, my own research indicates that...' ?

CelebrityMNer · 29/03/2009 17:39

To illustrate this, I put forward the example of...

ScottishMummy · 29/03/2009 17:55

wouldn't Harvard referencing sort this out?

X (name and date) and Y (name and date) argue that reducing health inequalities can be cost effective. For example...".

it is assumed if you don't cite a source that is your opinion.no need to emphasise or self reference

ScottishMummy · 29/03/2009 18:01

so upon reviewing X and Y theories of XYZ one could argue that health inequalities can be cost effective for the following reason (then state your reason)

hobbgoblin · 29/03/2009 18:05

In example I would suggest/agree/support/echo such sentiment 'quote your e.g.'

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2009 19:51

I a trying to avoid using "I". I know there are arguments either way but it would stand out as the only one anyway iyswim.
SM I think "it can be argued that..." is probably the best way, thanks. ISWYM about the referencing but that is something I' not 100% sure that. It goes like this X and Y argue that ..... [1]. For example..... How far does the reference 'cover' iyswim? I hate the things and have spent all day fighting with them!
Thanks for the help everyone, I think a bit of rewording should sort it.

is it an academic essay?Look at how to reference using the harvard system and this gives examples of how to reference in essay citing authors

you reference all work,ideas/theories attributable to others to support your discussion

good luck

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2009 20:57

I have done, it's the vancouver system. It's mostly OK but with these things I always find there are grey areas, or examples you need that aren't given. What I was meaning by how far to go was does that reference cover that sentence? Paragraph? Idea in general? So obviously if it's either of the last two, that's why I think there will be confusion.

ok not familiar with Vancouver system, but as general rule acknowledge someone else work and quotes etc

your reference for X and Y acknowledges them as author and so covers your citation

why dont you goggle vancover sytem, for tips. what i do recall from uni is you need to systematically adhere to the reference system

why not put another post, lots of MN wre lecturers and will be way more in know than me

again good luck

StealthPolarBear · 30/03/2009 20:22

Sorry to keep whittering on, but if there aren't quote marks around the paragraph, how far down the page is it assumed your reference extends?
Anyway, would like to know for general use, but no urgency now. Thanks for all the help. Assignment submitted and I'm desperately trying not to read it so I don't see the garing errors and omissions!
