Pedants' corner

I've been meaning to post about this for ages. That thing where you strike words out to be amusing...

You have to put the crossed out words before the uncrossed words.

The idea is that you initially type what you really mean, but then have second thoughts and cross it out to replace it with something more acceptable.

Good: "I let my children eat as much junk food as they like because I am lazy and neglectful freethinking and alternative."

Wrong: "The children spent the afternoon playing backgammon watching horror movies."

I keep seeing people put the crossed out words second, and it's WRONG.

There is something I find really irritating. It's when someone writes, 'here, here!' instead of, 'hear, hear!'

small,

Maybe they are directing you to something?

Pawslikepaddington · 27/03/2009 16:31

But isn't it here, here, as in "yes we agree over here", not as in "I can hear, I can hear"?

DevilsAdvocaat · 27/03/2009 16:32

unless they write:

"The children spent the afternoon playing backgammon and watching horror movies."

Lawks · 27/03/2009 16:42

Good point DA. That is correct too.

But traditionally, it's "hear, hear," as words of support, like in the House of Commons.

Then perhaps you are right and people are just trying to get me off the thread and onto something interesting like BLW.

Lindenlass · 27/03/2009 16:46

No Paws, it's like 'hear what she's saying!'

Pawslikepaddington · 27/03/2009 16:47

Aaah, I always thought it was here here, but then again I have never typed it before, so it has never mattered
