...how do you describe it (apart from if you're saying 'our' of course)?

Jo's and my house?
Jo and my house?
Mine and Jo's house?

Something I've always struggled with and it annoys me as I'm usually pretty good with grammar!

I would say the first, don't know why

no, actually I would say my house

this annoys the hell out of my DH

if I am talking to someone else and I say my bedroom, he will butt in and say it's our bedroom

but, I say that if I say our bedroom, it infers that the bedroom belongs to me and the person I am talking to

follow that?
so what should I say?

ellingwoman · 26/03/2009 19:58

I'd say 'mine and Jo's' but only because it flows better.

Cathpot · 26/03/2009 19:59

The first one feels right, possibly because you could take Jo or yourself out and it would still read correctly.

But I am just guessing.

Lindenlass · 26/03/2009 20:00

I agree with you Cathpot - it just sounds so clumsy! That's why I've always been unsure about it!

I would say "our house" actually!

CoteDAzur · 26/03/2009 20:01

Jo's and my house.

The two words should be interchangeable.

Jo's house
My house
Jo's and my house.

Tigerschick · 26/03/2009 20:04

I would probably say 'mine and Jo's house' but I don't think it is grammatically correct.

Definitely not 'Jo and my' as there is not possession implied in 'Jo'.

I think it should be 'Jo's and my house' but I'm not certain.

Lindenlass · 26/03/2009 20:06

But sometimes you can't say just 'our house' - sometimes you need to specify just who are talking about.
