In the middle of a sentence, obviously. A quick look on the internet Internet web suggests not but I thought that at some point in the past somebody had told me otherwise.

Blimey. Posting in this topic is terrifying isn't it? Forgive me any errors, I'm normally in bed by 10..

It isn't a proper name, is it? Therefore it doesn't merit the capital letter. IMHO.

Thank you Thumbwitch. I agree. Just wish I could remember who thought otherwise!

It has a capital letter if it's the world-wide network which we're using to communicate. The Internet. The Internet allows things like MN to exist. However MN is presented via the world-wide web* - you can't have a 'look on the Internet'. You can also have an internet with a small 'i' if it's one of the discrete ones which together make up the Internet with a capital 'I'.

If you're still in doubt, trying further research online (this is my cop-out term when I don't want to say web or Internet or the name of my company's intranet, etc).

  • erm, which may warrant capitals itself, but who ever expands WWW or 'web'?

No, internet is lc, because it's not a proper noun. You might as well say the Sky takes a capital letter because it's the worldwide network that allows clouds to exist.

I always see it used with a capital, but I hate it and refuse to myself.

Glad to read this; I do a lot of translation work and was never quite sure what to use in English (in Portuguese I use lc).
