There's quite a bit of difference between the two words but many people seem to think the two are interchangeable.

ShowOfHands · 19/02/2009 21:46

discreet/discrete
wandering/wondering

BecauseImWorthIt · 19/02/2009 21:46

God this drives me nuts. How on earth do people not know they are totally different?

tigerdriver · 19/02/2009 21:46

Probably the same people who think you spell "supersede" "supercede".

Fimbo · 19/02/2009 21:47

It bugs me. You bought something not brought it. But I do think it is a regional thing.

Sandles for sandals really annoys me too for some reason.

IAteMakkaPakka · 19/02/2009 21:50

Brought/bought really drives me nuts, it doesn't even sound similar.

I have a colleague who spells inflamed inflammed. That irks me but in the interests of diplomacy I have to keep quiet.

trixymalixy · 19/02/2009 21:51

This really bugs me as well.

kennythekangaroo · 19/02/2009 21:51

Children in my class say brang or brung which drives me to distraction.

ProfessorCalculus · 19/02/2009 21:52

Supersede's a bit different because it's just a spelling error, but bought and brought are two separate words with different meanings.

Brang/brung!?

God this drives me insane too! How can anyone get them confused. Everytime someone does it on Mumsnet I have to stop myself from pointing this out to them.

It's BOUGHT BOUGHT BOUGHT BOUGHT BOUGHT

InSearchOfLostKeys · 19/02/2009 21:56

don't forget 'should have/should of' grr

Lose/loose makes me bite my keyboard, it actually seems like 'loose' is used more frequently, on the net anyway

IAteMakkaPakka · 19/02/2009 22:05

Brang/brung reminds me of someone I know whose child gets mixed up with tenses (in fairness he's only four or something) and told her about how far he had "jamped" (jumped). Which was cute - but won't be if he's still saying it in ten years' time!

girlandboy · 19/02/2009 22:08

Sliver and slither makes me cross.

I was reading a newspaper the other day and it mentioned "saving your slithers of soap to make a new bar".

WHAT?

MsHighwater · 19/02/2009 22:12

We've had people speculating about whether fathers are more likely than mothers (whether or not engaged in adultery at the relevant time) to forget to to put the "breaks" on on their child's buggy while near the sea.

LOL Kenny, you aren't in the Midlands by any chance are you?
