Pedants' corner

OK pedants - I found this interesting, a sentence where it doesn't matter if you use it's or its

I read something recently and was pedantically surprised to notice that you could replace the 'its' with 'it's' without changing the meaning of the sentence (too much). Any ideas what sort of thing it was?

Your dad is a very clever man.

thumbwitch · 19/02/2009 16:22

BitofFun, it's good but it does rather change the meaning of the sentence, doesn't it?

BitOfFun · 19/02/2009 16:32

We're allowed a tweak in meaning, aren't we? I'm going to tell him he's a genius anyway

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2009 16:53

he is!
Although I think my tweak is smaller, although that might be unique to the word I've chosen

stealth, spill, or I'm not going to play any more!

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2009 17:00

OK, my sentence was

"We moved into the house last year and have just discovered it(')s damp"

Grooooaaaaan! Of course! I will tell him yours

thumbwitch · 19/02/2009 17:06

yes, that works better! Very good.

TigersEnglandChick · 19/02/2009 17:12

I'm very impressed that anyone could even begin to work this out - let alone come up with an answer!

I think both Stealth's and BoF's dad's are great ... much better than anything I'd ever come up with.

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2009 17:14

I know Tigers - it could have been anything, I am really impressed that people came up with solutions!
Now I wish I could find my thing!

Oh yes, good one!

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 21/02/2009 11:45

I have been thinking about this since Thursday

Could it be something like:
What makes XYZ so popular? It(')s taste.

thumbwitch · 21/02/2009 23:29

nope - cos it sounds like the it's would be for it IS taste, which wouldn't be right (would need to be tasty)
Stealth is right - it needs to be a word that doubles as a noun and an adjective without changing form. Like orange (but not, cos that won't work either.)

LadyOfWaffle · 21/02/2009 23:33

This is very intresting

Would just like to say that on other messageboards I've contributed to I am usually Chief Pedant. However, arriving here has made me realise that previously I was lulled into a false sense of superiority due to fraternising mostly with chimpanzees. We got excited whe we spotted a 'should of'. Now I have found you, I am so clearly out of my depth.
