How can a book that reinforces this over and over again win prestigious awards? Am I missing something?

It sounds dull anyway. At what age group is it aimed?

Aitch · 15/01/2009 10:35

it's a lovely book, i think you're taking it all too seriously if you can't see that tbh.

Aitch · 15/01/2009 10:35

my dd liked it when she was two, puz.

PuzzleRocks · 15/01/2009 10:37

Aitch, has she read Monkey Puzzle? DD loved that one.

youknownothingofthecrunch · 15/01/2009 10:40

The artwork is lovely. I didn't get it at first, but it does have a rhythmic quality which ds2 finds quite soporific.

Aitch · 15/01/2009 11:03

i think we have every julia donaldson going, puzzle, she loves them all. they have lovely rhythm schemes as well. dd also found monkey and me nice and soothing, we'd stop reading it, switch the lights off, and keep reciting it.

Lionstar · 15/01/2009 11:15

Awww DD (22 months) LOVES Monkey & Me, she is just getting into talking about the little girls actions and how they are like the animals - her favourite is the one where she is hanging upside down, and the fact that she hasn't finished her yoghurt (sacrelidge). Of course the other advantage is that it is a pretty short book, which speeds up bedtimes!

Anyway, isn't repetition a good thing for LOs? It scans, has rhyme and rhythm. They can quickly learn the words themselves and the repetition is good for those that might be starting to read (or at least be interested in letters)

Sold. I feel a prat about my first post now.

She got The Gruffalo for Christmas. She loves it now but clung to DH first time. He was a bit too convincing in the reading.

padboz · 15/01/2009 11:25

Oh we do think its a lovely book - at least dd2 loves it and I love the illustration, but the repetition of Monkey and ME (as opposed to I) grates. Unfortunately its a huge favorite in our house
