Pedants' corner

This is driving me a bit nuts, but is it incorrect?

Headlines (maily in the DM - I'm just clicking on links, promise) that say "Woman Primary School Teacher etc .....".

Should it say female? Why they feel the need to add "woman" anyway is whole thread alone.

'First woman Prime Minister' is OK so unfortunately they're using a recognised construct.

I'm afraid I couldn't possibly look on their website - what's the context?

Link It's apparently about a female teacher who groomed a student. Haven't read it, but further up the page there's a story about a lawyer, and the title decribes her as "Top female lawyer". So I think they are using the two terms in a kind of juxtaposition. Or am I reading too much into it!
I really have to start reading a better quality paper. The DM just makes me annoyed!

Thanks for the explanation though.

So they want to highlight the 'salacious' side for all their male readers with tongues hanging out at the thought of their old primary teachers seducing them

And then they've thought, well here's another story about blardy wimmin getting above themselves and working etc etc, so let's put 'Top female lawyer' story on the same page as a sort of clever, like, theme

Here endeth the lesson in Fleet Street editors' thought processes. As you were.

Many thanks and much more eloquently put than I could ever manage!
I will sleep well tonight
