OK this is probably very minor in the great scheme of things but I am developing a great irritation with people who put "Enjoy!" at the end of something. Today I must have had at least three emails with that on the end.

Huh. I'll see how I feel about it first thanks.

Huh.

whispers....< I do that sometimes>

It's supposed to be an optimistic, happy and light hearted ending to replace the (IMO) more annoying and insincere Best/Kind regards.

I'll leave now

PrimulaVeris · 09/01/2009 17:57

Guilty as charged

Enjoy!

SuperBunny · 09/01/2009 18:00

Oh no, I did this with some Christmas gifts - I made fudge, cake & stuff and put 'Enjoy!' at the end of the card

BitOfFun · 09/01/2009 18:03

A work experience boy used to say this to the (frequently elderly) customers at my old bookshop as they left with their purchase. It made my teeth itch.

Katisha · 09/01/2009 19:39

Oh dear - you see to me it comes across as rather bumptious ...

"Hope you enjoy this" would be fine though! (Oh the joys of being Victor Meldrew..)It's the imperative that does it. And the exclamation mark.

Ooohhh - one of my pet hates. Enjoy was a transitive verb - as it, it has to have an object, so "enjoy this" is fine. It's started to be used in an intransitive form and I think it's vile. Blee.

TsarChasm · 12/01/2009 16:11

Oooh yes it's annoying! Especially in restaurants. I want to say..'I'll let you know..'

LadyOfWaffle · 12/01/2009 16:13

I do this, like I guess 'bon appetit' is abit 'wrong' (?) but it's not wrong, if you see what I mean ...

MaryAnnSingleton · 12/01/2009 16:15

it's a bit of a threat really - 'enjoy, or else'
I'm the same with cheers as a departing shot

TsarChasm · 12/01/2009 16:17

'Bon appetit' makes me think of Basil Fawlty saying it and it's funny.

Katisha · 12/01/2009 18:47

Habbibu thank you for giving me a proper reason to hate it!

snigger · 12/01/2009 18:54

Just respond with another random verb :

Hesitate!

Carve!

Singe!

That'll teach 'em

I agree though, it's excruciating.

Agree!

naswm · 12/01/2009 19:04

I dont see it as any more of a threat than 'Happy Christmas' - as in 'go on, have a happy Christmas' lol!

I dont have a problem with enjoy! (it has to have the exclamation mark btw...) but I dont do 'huh' lol

And I also dont do apostrophes in texts or emails, unless it is a business message

cornsilk · 12/01/2009 19:05

I always snigger inwardly when someone says it. It's so presumptious.

BBBee · 12/01/2009 19:12

oh god yes - worthy of the reply 'fuck off' IMO - so presumptious.

GrimmaTheNome · 12/01/2009 19:15

I think 'Enjoy!' on a box of homemade fudge would be acceptable - since there is a very enjoyable object attached.

But on an email...bleurgh.

cornsilk · 12/01/2009 19:16

Yes I agree - on sweets it's okay. When you're serving a meal to somebody it's so not.

Habbibu · 12/01/2009 19:22

"I think 'Enjoy!' on a box of homemade fudge would be acceptable" Nah. "Enjoy the fudge" would be fine. "Enjoy!" is just vile.

Pan · 12/01/2009 19:40

Seem to recall this starting in this country at least in 'bistro' places where the staff can be a little over-familiar....."I hope you enjoy your meal." is a darn sight classier than expressing an imperative. Makes you feel like saying "Enjoy what exactly, hmm? Hmm?"

never seen it on an email. wouldn't want to.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/01/2009 20:03

Ah, I like 'Enjoy!' but only when sarcastic.

As in: The kids have been miserable, I'm off swimming. Enjoy!

BarcodeZebra · 12/01/2009 20:32

Snigger! Genius! I'm doing this from now on.

Hassled · 12/01/2009 20:34

I use it in an ironic, I-know-you're-going-to-hate-this sense. In hindsight, it's probably bloody annoying.

Katisha · 12/01/2009 20:36

Singe!

Habbibu · 12/01/2009 21:19

"Hesitate!

Carve!

Singe!"

Are you Gordon Ramsay?

Katisha · 12/01/2009 21:22

F@*K!
