Think so!

edam · 05/01/2009 20:25

I would. But I don't. 'An' because it's followed by 'em'. Or you could write 'I am an MSc' - technically correct but would sound a bit off (to me, at any rate). Or 'I am qualified to MSc level'. Bit round the houses, though.

Fivesetsofschoolfees · 05/01/2009 20:25

a MSc. When there are abbreviations, you have to use the article appropriate to the expanded form.

edam · 05/01/2009 20:26

(I don't = am a mere arts grad at batchelor level, not objecting to you stating the facts!)

edam · 05/01/2009 20:26

disagree, fivesets - current style is to reflect the sound of the words were you to read them aloud. You have an MSc but a doctorate.

randomcupsoftea · 05/01/2009 20:27

Would write - "I hold an Msc in Whatever"

randomcupsoftea · 05/01/2009 20:27

opps - meant MSc!

bigspender30 · 05/01/2009 20:30

So are we all agreed then?!
An MSc
as opposed to
A MSc

OP posts:
wheresthehamster · 05/01/2009 20:31

Definitely an. People don't say 'I am studying for a NVQ' otherwise they would sound like a robot.

edam · 05/01/2009 20:33

I am (agreed, that is). I may not have an MSc but I am an editor IRL so I feel qualified to assert that 'an' is correct! [GRIN]

edam · 05/01/2009 20:33

Hoist with my own petard there, though...

AMumInScotland · 05/01/2009 20:59

I would say "I have an MSc" (and I'd mean it... )

pippibluestocking · 05/01/2009 21:03

Most definitely an MSc. No question about it!

edam · 05/01/2009 21:22

As in, you have an MSc and you're not afraid to use it, AMumInScotland?

What superpowers could you wield with yours? I rather fancy marine biology and my superpower would be the ability to make sharks attack (or divert them)!

bigspender30 · 05/01/2009 21:26

the funny thing is I actually have a BA not AN MSc but doing a CV for a mate.
Thanks all you Masters and mistresses of the English language

Unfortunately, mine only gives the power to baffle and confuse, usually when I tell people the title... they glaze over

edam · 05/01/2009 22:42

next time, tell 'em it's in rocket science. And that actually, it's really really easy.

EachPeachPearMum · 06/01/2009 20:45

Isn't it actually M.Sc. ?

edam · 06/01/2009 21:04

yes, but current style tends to be against using unnecessary stops and (capitalisation). So BBC, not B.B.C.
