MN today is on fire. I am hoping the pedants are still plodding correctly along as usual.

Now can anyone tell me why a premature baby is known as a preemie and not a premmie? And is the written preemie still pronounced "premm-ee"? I am not particularly bothered by it, have just noticed it & wondered.

Not sure why, but might it be because in the US 'premature' is pronounced 'pree-mature' and the word has come from the US?

preemie is only used by americans and they are notorious for their poor use of the mother tonbgue
