NewHollyOtherIvy - You may sympathise with me as I work with someone who has never knowingly used the word 'taken'. It's 'took' for all eventualities- 'he's took it' ( off of!), I've took it' etc. As we're talking schools here,it's not good.

On a semi-related tangent, if one more person being interviewed uses misnomer when they mean misunderstanding or misconception then I feel it will be my duty to write to The Times.

I've still got a pen, you know

I love using words I'm not quite sure of the meaning of, but only in front of DH who I use as my dictionary/thesauraus.

People using big words incorrectly to make themselves sound more intelligent brings on a serious cringe moment.

I agree about "I'm not being funny right"!

Everyone I know who uses that phrase follows it with something, offensive, racist or just plain rude!

Sallero - I am the same but I run new words past my lovely and very clever boss - she knows the meaning of every word ever spoken, I'm sure!

Phew - first post in pedant's corner and I think it was all grammatically correct!!!!

thumbElf · 18/12/2008 16:33

second one wasnt though! there are more pedants here than just you, so it is pedants' corner!

thumbElf · 18/12/2008 16:33

damn my apostrophe key - it needs to be hit twice as hard as the others and doesn't always work [grr]

SixSpotBurNativity · 18/12/2008 16:36

That is a disadvantage for a self-professed pedant...
