Yesterday at my local leisure centre a member of staff caught me surreptitiously removing a rogue apostrophe from one of their signs with a biro.

I was asked to refrain from defacing their signs (or should that be "sign's"?) and asked to leave.

I was mortified.

Surely they have spellcheckers?

Frosty, where in Oxford? I've got to pop in tomorrow so could go and make a point too!

RustyBear · 14/12/2008 21:46

If it was going to be DVD's with the ' replacing the isc, then it should be D'V'D's, because all the words have missing letters....

thisisyesterday · 14/12/2008 21:51

so should it just be dvds? i dunno, because dvd is an acronym, so I suppose we can't just add another letter? otherwise it wouldn't be?

RustyBear · 14/12/2008 22:56

Well, whatever DVD is an acronym for -Digital Video Disc, or Digital Versatile disc (nobody seems to be sure) presumably it would also be the acronym for Digital Video Discs - so the plural of DVD would be DVD...

hmm this is true. i like that

Perhaps it was very rough spinning?

DVDs - because it's plural, not possessive and using upper case is easier for people to understand. Acronyms used to be upper case. Style is changing but I do think it causes confusion sometimes - had to go back a few pars when reading a newspaper yesterday because they'd put an acronym in lower case and it could have been another word.

It was Leopard Press on Windmill Road in Headington - perhaps we could start a whole new section in MN local: Places to go and complain about bad punctuation and/or spelling in your neighbourhood

Didn't its used to be convention that the letters with an acronym were seperated by .s. So should it be D.V.D.?

Kathyis6incheshigh · 17/12/2008 17:48

Oh Branflake, you're my hero. I have always wanted to do something like that but never been brave enough.

I hope you were wearing combats and a balaclava at the time.
